Tasting note
Already well-known in the middle Ages under the name of Maison Noble de Lagrange Monteil, Chateau Lagrange is located in the Saint-Julien appellation. The estate currently covers 157 hectares of land, of which 115 are under vine, in a single block. The vineyard is planted on two Gunzian gravel rises. Production methods combine the best of traditional and modern methods. Vine density per hectare is high and the soil is cultivated in the classic Medoc manner. The grapes are handpicked and sorted prior to crushing. Traditional Bordeaux winemaking procedures are used and fermentation lakes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats. The wine is aged in oak barrels (of which 60% are new every year) in an air conditioned cellar.

As third cru classé in the imperial classification of 1855, Château Lagrange has enjoyed a long history which began in
Read more1796 when Jean Valère Cabarrus, the Count of the Empire and Minister of Finance under Napoleon I, bought and expanded the estate. A vast wine-growing estate could finally come into being from his many acquisitions, and today covers 117 hectares, making Lagrange the largest wine-growing estate for cru classé in the Médoc. In 1983, the leading Japanese drinks and spirits group Suntory purchased the estate, thus making it possible for the château to be completely renovated, right down to the working tools, from the vineyards to the fermentation rooms and storage cellars. The new owners are committed to a quality-focused approach, which -- under the watchful eye of Marcel Ducasse -- has, since the 1980s, enabled them to bring out the finer character of this large terroir with its gravel soils, by a process of parcel selection. Today, it is Bruno Eynard, Managing Director of the vineyard, who governs the fate of this fine wine. The result is a wine of outstanding elegance, finesse and aromatic generosity, which ages well, much to the delight of those who enjoy a vin de garde.
