Description
A delicate and balanced Second Wine of Pomerol
The estate
Established gradually by the Léglise family from Libourne around the middle of the 18th century, Château L’Évangile quickly earned the reputation of a "First Growth of Haut-Pomerol". After having been owned by the Ducasse family, it was in 1990 that the Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite acquired the estate and invested into making the estate one of the appellation’s best. From the vineyard to the cellar, Château L’Évangile has undergone major restructuring and modernisations that have made the property shine bright among the finest references in the Pomerol appellation.
The vineyard
Château L'Évangile is a Pomerol wine made from a 22-hectare vineyard. The vines are netstled between Château Pétrus to the north and Château Cheval Blanc to the south. The vineyard is planted on sandy-clay soils with pure gravel, resting on a subsoil made up of the appellation’s famous iron ore.
The wine
Blason de l'Évangile is the Second Wine of the estate.
The vintage
A relatively mild winter preceded a mild spring with little rainfall. Flowering was rapid and even. The summer was particularly hot and was punctuated by rainy spells, which favoured an optimal crop development. The rainfall recorded as the harvest drew closer ensured that the grapes were perfectly ripe.
Vinification and ageing
Alcoholic fermentation in temperature-controlled cement vats, with light pumping over to optimise extraction. Maceration without any external intervention, followed by transfer to French oak barrels (80%) and vats (20%) for malolactic fermentation and ageing for approximately 16 months.
The blend
Merlot (61%)
Cabernet Franc (39%).
