Description

Inglenook reveals a refined red wine from California with a rich aromatic palette

The estate

Located in the Rutherford AVA in Napa Valley, Inglenook is a winegrowing estate created by Gustave Niebaum, a Finnish captain, in 1879. The estate’s wines quickly became reputed for their quality and richness.

From 1975, Francis and Eleanor Coppola gradually acquired the entire estate with the ambition of making Inglenook an iconic reference of Californian wines. The couple instigated major infrastructure renovations, hiring renowned winegrower, André Tchelistcheff, as a consultant, as well as Philippe Bascaules from Château Margaux to supervise vinifications.

A pioneering estate that constantly innovates, Inglenook owes its distinctiveness to the unique and authentic expression of its great terroirs through delicate, refined and perfectly balanced wines. These wines are recognised by many critics, as evidenced in 1990 when the Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon 1941 obtained a 100/100 score from Wine Spectator.

The vineyard

Inglenook overlooks a 95-hectare vineyard certified in Organic Farming since 1991. The variations in the vineyard’s topography reflect the mosaic of terroirs in Napa Valley and contribute to Inglenook’s uniqueness. In 2015, the estate began an ambitious programme to replant an average of 2% of the vineyard each year so as to ensure the vineyard’s continuous renewal.

The wine

Produced since 1978, Rubicon Rutherford by Inglenook is produced from the most high-quality plots at the estate. Its name is a reference to when Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon river in 49 BCE.

The vintage

The rainfall in March and April encouraged slow and regular vine development. Mild temperatures throughout the season allowed the berries to ripen early, gradually and uniformly, imparting freshness and elegance to the final blend of this cuvée. 2018 was characterised by a generous harvest and a high quality.

Winemaking and ageing

The Rubicon Rutherford 2018 by Inglenook enjoys 18 months of exclusive ageing in French oak barrels, 75% of which are new.

Blend

This Rubicon Rutherford 2018 by Inglenook is produced from a blend of 88% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% of Petit Verdot.

Tasting

Colour

This wine is rich and highly coloured.

Nose

The nose unveils a rich aromatic palette made up of exotic flavours that bring to mind ripe blackcurrant, allspice, star anise, vanilla and black liquorice.

Palate

The palate seduces with its mouth-coating toach, as well as its beautiful concentration which is mixed with supple, silky tannins and sustained by a refreshing acidity. The finish is persistent and expressive.

Keeping

The Rubicon Rutherford 2018 by Inglenook can be preserved in the cellar for several decades to develop its entire aromatic palette.
