The Structure and Precision of a Portuguese White Wine by Anselmo Mendes
The Estate
Created in 1998 by Anselmo Mendes in the Minho region, this estate covers 130 hectares of alvarinho and loureiro in the Monção e Melgaço area. Nicknamed “Mr. Alvarinho,” Anselmo Mendes, owner and current manager, revolutionized the vinho verde by focusing on dry, mineral wines. A pioneer of sustainable viticulture, he combines ancestral techniques and innovative methods such as skin fermentation and aging in oak barrels, partnering in 2023 with the Symington family.
The Vineyard
The vines of Curtimenta are planted in the Monção & Melgaço sub-region, at the heart of the DO Vinho Verde appellation. Located between 100 and 200 meters of altitude, they benefit from an oceanic climate with 1,600 mm of rain per year. The alluvial and granite soils are home to vines aged over 14 years..
Winemaking and Aging
The Curtimenta 2019 benefits from meticulous winemaking starting with manual harvesting. After destemming, the grapes undergo a 24-hour skin maceration before fermentation in 400-liter barrels with indigenous yeasts. The aging of this Minho wine continues for 9 months in barrels on the lees with regular lees stirring, followed by an additional 12 months in the bottle.
Grape Variety
100 % alvarinho, the emblematic grape variety of the Monção & Melgaço region.
