Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Verdelho Colheita Single Harvest 2009 Blandy's
Tasting
Colour
The colour is a topaz hue enhanced by golden highlights, perfectly clear and brilliant.
Nose
The bouquet is intense and distinctive, combining touches of spice, dried fruit and characteristic briny notes.
Palate
The medium dry attack gives way to a fresh palate underpinned by pronounced salinity, followed by a long, spicy finish blending hints of brandy and dried fruit.
Food and Wine Pairings
This wine finds a natural echo in briny preparations such as seafood or lightly smoked fish, whose minerality responds to its own salinity. It also pairs well with tapas combining nuts or dried fruit and mature cheeses, as well as with dishes in sauce with a touch of richness, such as terrines, where its tangy freshness provides a welcome counterpoint.
Serving and Cellaring
The Verdelho Colheita Single Harvest 2009 benefits from decanting, as a light natural sediment may appear over time. It should be stored upright in a cool, dry place away from light, at a constant temperature, ideally below 16°C.
A Verdelho Colheita from Blandy's, a True Product of the Terras Madeirenses
The Estate
Founded in 1811 in Madeira, Blandy's is today one of the most emblematic names in the Terras Madeirenses wine-growing zone. The only founding family of the Madeira wine trade still to own and run its own winemaking business, it relies on approximately 7 hectares of its own vineyards, complemented by a network of more than 350 partner growers. The house is now led by Chris Blandy, the seventh generation of the family, whose majority stake is accompanied by a minority partnership with the Symington family. The house upholds values of authenticity, expertise and openness to new practices in the service of quality.
The Vineyard
The Verdelho grapes for this Madeira wine come from the areas of Santa, near Porto Moniz, and Raposeira, on the north coast of the island of Madeira. These Portuguese vines are trained on trellises on soils of volcanic origin, made up of basalt, trachyte, tufa, scoria and conglomerates, in a temperate oceanic climate where rainfall varies with altitude. This exposure to maritime freshness allows the grape variety to retain pronounced natural acidity.
Winemaking and Ageing
To produce the Verdelho Colheita Single Harvest 2009, the grapes were harvested by hand, with a quality selection staggered over several weeks according to their ripeness. The wine was then aged using the traditional canteiro method, in 650-litre casks at ambient temperature, until it was bottled in 2022. The entire process, from vinification to bottling, was overseen by oenologist Francisco Albuquerque.
Grape Variety
This Madeira wine is made from Verdelho.
