Sweet honey, lemon rind and cooked pineapple. Medium sweet, medium-bodied and an easy finish with toffee and caramel undertones to the cooked fruit. Second wine of Rieussec. Drink in 2021.

Vinous

Antonio Galloni

The 2016 Carmes de Rieussec is absolutely gorgeous. Hints of passionfruit, pineapple and mint all run through this gracious Sauternes. Medium in body, open-knit and accessible, the 2016 is easy to drink and enjoy right now. The 2016 Carmes is an absolutely delicious second wine from Rieussec that emphasizes freshness and immediacy. Residual sugar is relatively modest at 120 grams per liter.

Pale golden yellow with silver reflections. Fresh nuances of orange zest, ripe apricot and delicate honey blossom. Complex, powerful, vivid young oak, pleasant sweetness, yellow tropical fruit on the finish, with power and poise.

Andreas Larsson

Much more aromatic than the grand vin with attractive yellow fruit notes, almond, saffron and a fine toastiness. The palate is medium bodied with a fresh backbone, pineapple and sweet citrus notes with fine drinkability, freshness and length.

La RVF

A beautiful burst of fruit in this sweet, sapid wine. It does its job well: indulgent, silky on the palate, with pure, clean fruit.

Yves Beck

Pale golden-yellow. A bouquet of good intensity with notes of citrus and saffron. Smooth, candied, and creamy attack. Lovely balance on the palate thanks to a juicy structure that holds the wine together well. A gourmet wine that is already very approachable.

Wine Enthusiast

R.V.

Packed with ripe, honeyed Sémillon, this wine has richness while also keeping plenty of freshness. Acidity and a crisp edge are balanced with the intense orange marmalade and spice flavors that will make this wine develop well. Drink from 2022.

Description

Complex and refined, a fine Sauternes wine

The estate

Château Rieussec is located in the prestigious Sauternes appellation, in the south of the Bordeaux region. This château is steeped in history and belonged to the Carmelite monks of Langon in the 18th century. It was then sold as "National Property" following the French Revolution. Classified as an 1855 Sauternes Premier Grand Cru, Château Rieussec was acquired by the Rothschild family in 1984.

The vineyard

The estate’s Second Vin, Carmes de Rieussec, is a Sauternes wine that stems from a sandy-clay gravel terroir. The vineyard of Château Rieussec is situated on the border between Fargues and Sauternes and covers 93 hectares, thus making it one of the largest estates in the appellation.

The vintage

The mild and humid weather at the beginning of winter gave way to cooler conditions which lasted up until budbreak around April 8th. The summer drought led to significant water stress until the end of veraison period. The rainy episode on September 13th was beneficial for the vineyard and was followed by hot and dry weather which caused a late development of botrytis. The grapes were harvested under ideal conditions from September 26th to November 4th, resulting in a vintage with a great potential.

The blend

Semillon (97%)

Muscadelle (2%).

Sauvignon Blanc (1%)
