Characteristics and tasting tips for Château Le Pin 2016
Tasting
Colour
The wine displays a deep garnet hue with purple highlights, showing remarkable brilliance and intensity.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet is highly complex, blending scents of ripe black fruit such as cherry and blackberry with delicate floral notes of violet. With aeration, subtle hints of spice, toast and cocoa further enrich the whole.
Palate
The palate offers a silky, velvety texture, combining rich, opulent substance with elegant tension. Exceptionally fine tannins accompany a remarkably long, persistent finish.
Food and wine pairing
This great red wine pairs beautifully with fine meats such as roast rack of lamb, beef tenderloin with truffles or feathered game. It will also elevate refined vegetarian dishes featuring mushrooms, as well as aged hard cheeses.
Serving and cellaring
To fully appreciate Château Le Pin 2016, decant it one to two hours before tasting and serve at a temperature of 16 to 18°C. Built for very long ageing, this vintage can rest in the cellar and be enjoyed until around 2050.
An elegant, unctuous red wine from Pomerol
The estate
Founded in 1979 by Jacques Thienpont, Château Le Pin quickly established itself as one of the most sought-after wines in Bordeaux. This micro-estate embodies excellence and rarity, and is often regarded as the pioneer of garage wines on the Right Bank. Today, the property still belongs to the Thienpont family, with oenologist Diana Berrouet Garcia serving as general manager since 2022. The estate upholds a philosophy centred on concentration, voluptuousness and meticulous precision, raising its wines to the very top of the world hierarchy.
The vineyard
Located on the famous plateau of Pomerol, this tiny vineyard of just over two hectares enjoys an exceptional terroir. The old vines thrive on soils of gravel, clay and sand, resting on a subsoil rich in crasse de fer (iron pan). This warm, early-ripening terroir, farmed using traditional methods, allows the grapes to reach optimal ripeness while retaining great freshness.
The vintage
The year began with a particularly wet winter and spring, which built up excellent water reserves. The summer then proved very dry, slowing ripening and calling for a late harvest that began in October. These contrasting weather conditions resulted in naturally very low yields, beautifully concentrating the berries.
Winemaking and ageing
Château Le Pin 2016 was vinified plot by plot in small stainless steel vats in order to respect the identity of each lot. Malolactic fermentation then took place directly in barrels. Finally, the wine underwent meticulous ageing for 18 to 24 months, exclusively in brand-new oak barrels.
Grape variety
100% Merlot.
