Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole 2023 by Domaine Nicole Lamarche
Tasting
Colour
This wine displays a deep, dark ruby hue with remarkable brilliance and an exceptionally fine grain.
Nose
The nose opens with delicate aromas of dried flowers, such as violet, and ripe red fruits reminiscent of wild strawberry and cherry. A stony minerality blends in harmoniously, and with aeration it gives way to subtle notes of sweet spices and forest floor.
Palate
On the palate, this red wine charms with its silky, velvety texture. There is perfect balance between well-integrated acidity and highly elegant tannins. The particularly persistent finish carries the fruity and floral notes on at length.
Food and Wine Pairings
This great wine pairs beautifully with refined dishes such as pigeon fillet with foie gras and mushrooms, roasted meats, game birds or jugged hare. It can also brilliantly accompany fine fish prepared with a red wine sauce.
Serving and Ageing
To fully appreciate La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole 2023, serve it at 16–18°C, after a brief decanting in its youth. Blessed with exceptional ageing potential, this wine can be cellared and will reveal its full complexity until around 2048.
Other Characteristics
To preserve all its substance and complexity, this wine is bottled without fining or filtration, which may lead to a slight natural deposit forming over the years.
The Elegance and Depth of a Burgundy Grand Cru Monopole
The Estate
With winegrowing roots dating back to 1797, Domaine Nicole Lamarche truly took shape in the early 20th century in Vosne-Romanée, in the heart of Burgundy, France. Now run by Nicole Lamarche, the estate covers around ten hectares. The domaine is world-renowned for its jewel acquired in 1933: La Grande Rue, a family monopole elevated to Grand Cru status in 1992. Farming her vines organically, Nicole Lamarche crafts wines sought after for their finesse and the pure expression of their terroir.
The Vineyard
The La Grande Rue climat covers a tiny 1.65-hectare plot, forming a narrow strip of land ideally situated between the legendary Romanée-Conti and La Tâche. Resting on a bedrock of Premeaux limestone, the calcareous brown soils vary in depth along the slope. The old vines, planted at high density and yielding low volumes, are farmed according to organic principles with a biodynamic approach, fostering biodiversity and the health of this exceptional Burgundian terroir.
The Vintage
The 2023 vintage offered particularly balanced weather conditions. This climatic harmony allowed the grapes to reach optimal ripeness while remaining in perfect health, ensuring a harvest of great purity.
Vinification and Ageing
The grapes are harvested by hand. For La Grande Rue Grand Cru Monopole 2023, the berries are fully destemmed before a maceration of around twenty days. Fermentation begins naturally with indigenous yeasts, favouring gentle extraction. The wine then undergoes a measured ageing of 16 to 20 months in oak barrels, with a moderate proportion of new wood, to preserve the elegance and identity of the terroir.
