Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Morey-Saint-Denis 1er cru "Les Genavrières" 2022 from Domaine Virgile Lignier-Michelot
Tasting
Appearance
This wine displays an intense, vivid red colour.
Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals notes of red and black fruit, accompanied by spicy touches and delicate floral nuances.
Palate
The palate offers a tannic structure that is both fine and firm. The wine stands out for its lovely breadth, combining intense fruit with remarkable freshness, before closing on a persistent finish.
Food and wine pairing
This red wine pairs harmoniously with flavourful meats such as duck breast with cherries or roast leg of lamb with herbes de Provence. It is also a wonderful match for a hard cooked cheese such as an aged Comté.
Serving and cellaring
With strong ageing potential, this Morey-Saint-Denis 1er cru "Les Genavrières" 2022 can be cellared to develop over one or two decades, allowing it to be enjoyed until around 2042.
The structured, fresh expression of a Morey-Saint-Denis Premier Cru
The estate
Located in the heart of Burgundy, Domaine Virgile Lignier-Michelot is a family estate whose modern history, and its establishment under its own name, began with its first bottlings in 1992. Now run by Laure and Virgile Lignier, the estate farms a fragmented vineyard of around twelve hectares, mainly in the Côte de Nuits. Renowned for its environmentally respectful approach, the estate has practised uncertified organic viticulture since 2010, guided by the lunar calendar, in order to express the nuances of its prestigious terroirs with precision.
The vineyard
The "Les Genavrières" climat is a Premier Cru of just over one hectare located in the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis. Situated mid-slope, above the famous Clos de la Roche, this plot benefits from excellent drainage and a favourable exposure. The soils here are stony and composed of marl and limestone. The estate tends these old vines with low yields and entirely manual harvesting, without any use of herbicides.
The vintage
In Burgundy, 2022 was marked by a warm and particularly sunny growing season. Despite these high temperatures, the limestone terroirs and well-exposed slopes allowed the vines to maintain excellent balance. The grapes thus reached full ripeness while retaining lovely freshness.
Winemaking and ageing
The estate's philosophy is based on a measured, gentle approach. For this Morey-Saint-Denis 1er cru "Les Genavrières" 2022, ageing takes place in two stages. The wine first rests for twelve months in oak barrels, with a carefully adjusted proportion of new wood to support its structure. It is then transferred to stainless steel tanks for a further four months, allowing it to refine and harmonise before bottling.
