The structure and balance of a red wine from Duriense
The property
Founded in 1842 by Franciscus Marius van der Niepoort, the Niepoort house is a pillar of Portuguese wine, now led by Dirk Niepoort, fifth generation. Located in the Douro wine region, also known as Duriense, Niepoort stands out for its balance between tradition and innovation. With biodynamic practices and a diversification towards dry wines, it preserves the heritage while exploring new avenues, such as the NAT'Cool! project.
The vineyard
The grapes for the Redoma Tinto come from the vineyards of Quinta de Napoles and the Pinhão valley in the Douro. The vines, over 70 years old, rest on schist soils at an altitude varying between 150 and 500 meters.
Vinification and aging
The grapes are hand-harvested and then trodden in traditional Portuguese lagares. The malolactic fermentation then takes place in old wooden barrels. The aging, lasting 22 months, also takes place in old barrels, allowing slow micro-oxygenation without the addition of marked woody notes.
Blend
This wine is made from a blend of native Portuguese grape varieties: tinta amarela, tinta roriz, touriga franca, touriga nacional, and tinto cão. This varietal diversity contributes to the aromatic complexity and balanced structure of the wine.
