James Suckling

Zekun Shuai

A complex yet super discreet nose with hints of wet stone, wet earth, peppercorn and graphite to the red and blue fruits. An elegant expression but this has an intense mid-palate with tight but silky tannins. Long, complex and soft-spoken. Nothing conspicuous here. Impeccable interplay between concentration and purity. Will age really well. Drinkable now but better from 2025.

Description

The richness and aromatic expression of a great Argentine wine

The estate

In 1902, Nicola Catena founded the Bodega Catena Zapata in Mendoza, Argentina, planting his first plots of malbec. Taken over in the 1960s by Nicolás Catena Zapata, the estate modernised by drawing inspiration from Napa Valley winemaking and exploiting high-altitude terroirs. Nicknamed "The Grand Cru of South America", the Bodega is recognised for the elegance and finesse of its wines.

The wine

The name of this cuvée also refers to the microorganisms present in the limestone layers, which help the vine roots resist stress and absorb nutrients. These rhizobacteria are called "mundus bacillus terrae" or "elegant microbes of the earth".

The vineyard

The first malbec cru produced by the estate, Adrianna Mundus Bacillus Terrae Malbec from Bodega Catena Zapata is a wine from Mendoza resulting from a rigorous selection of grapes from the Adrianna vineyard. Named after Nicolás Catena Zapata's youngest daughter, this 1.4-hectare vineyard located at 1390 metres above sea level is characterised by its alluvial soil composed of limestone.
