Description
Tasting Notes and Serving Tips for the Pernand-Vergelesses 1er cru « Ile des Vergelesses » 2011 from Domaine Champy
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a beautiful garnet hue.
Nose
On the nose, the wine reveals great finesse, with delicate spice notes, red and black fruits (cherry, blackcurrant), followed by an elegant floral touch of violet.
Palate
The palate opens with a fresh attack, carried by well-defined minerality. The fruit remains precise and balanced, while the lively acidity brings tension and a refined finish.
Food and wine pairings
This Pernand-Vergelesses 1er cru « Ile des Vergelesses » pairs beautifully with Italian charcuterie. It also complements red meats, such as duck breast with blackcurrant, grilled beef, or confit lamb shoulder. With a cheese board, the pairing also works very well.
Serving and cellaring
The Pernand-Vergelesses 1er cru « Ile des Vergelesses » is best enjoyed between 15 and 16 °C.
A Burgundian Premier Cru combining refinement and aromatic richness
The estate
Founded in Beaune in 1720 by Edme Champy, a cooper, Champy is regarded as the oldest Burgundy négociant-éleveur House. Since 2016, it has been part of the AdVini group and farms 21 hectares on the Côte de Beaune, from Volnay to Corton-Charlemagne. Committed to more environmentally respectful viticulture, it now has a split of 50% of vines certified organic and 50% certified Haute Valeur Environnementale. Awarded the Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant label in 2021, Champy combines heritage and modernity, and remains the only production site still in operation in the heart of Beaune’s old town.
The vineyard
The Pernand-Vergelesses 1er cru « Ile des Vergelesses » comes from plots located in Pernand-Vergelesses, at the northern end of the Côte de Beaune. The vineyard, with its pronounced relief, stretches between 250 and 350 meters above sea level. The vines take root in clay-limestone marls, which give the wine its structure and mineral character.
Winemaking and aging
The Pernand-Vergelesses 1er cru « Ile des Vergelesses » grapes were harvested by hand. A cold soak preceded a spontaneous alcoholic fermentation carried out with indigenous yeasts. The vatting period lasted around three weeks. Aging was conducted for 14 months in eight barrels, 25% of which were new oak.
Grape variety
This Burgundy wine is made from 100% Pinot Noir.
