Description
Tasting Notes and Serving Suggestions for the Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Marconnets" 2021 from Chanson
Tasting
Appearance
A bright, radiant ruby hue dresses this wine, reflecting careful winemaking and controlled extraction.
Nose
The bouquet reveals fine aromatic complexity dominated by floral notes of peony and violet. These fragrances intertwine harmoniously with aromas of lightly stewed red fruits, lifted by spicy and vanilla nuances imparted by barrel aging.
Palate
On the palate, the wine shows a well-defined structure with a slightly muscular texture. The tannins are elegant and delicate, supported by vibrant acidity that brings freshness and energy to the whole. The finish lingers pleasantly with fruity and spicy notes.
Food and wine pairings
This Beaune 1er Cru is an ideal match for grilled poultry, mushroom roast beef, or duck with peach sauce. It also pairs beautifully with Burgundy pressed cheeses such as Comté, Reblochon, Saint-Nectaire, or Cîteaux.
Serving and cellaring
The Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Marconnets" 2021 can be enjoyed now and will continue to evolve until around 2029. It is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 15 and 17°C.
An elegant, concentrated Beaune Premier Cru despite a demanding vintage
The estate
Founded in 1750 in Beaune, in Bourgogne, Domaine Chanson is among the three oldest houses in the region still in operation. Owned by the Bollinger group since 1999, it is now led by Thierry Berger (Managing Director since 2025). The vineyard totals 88-90 ha, including 43 historic hectares in Côte de Beaune (certified organic in 2024) and 45 hectares in Côte Chalonnaise since 2023. Its 16th-century bastion, used for aging, embodies its identity.
The vineyard
Clos des Marconnets spans nine hectares in the northern part of the Beaune appellation. Domaine Chanson owns four hectares, i.e. 40% of the total surface area, making it one of the leading holders of this climat. The vineyard benefits from a favorable mid-slope exposure and lies on clay-limestone soils with close proximity to the limestone bedrock. This geological composition gives the wine structure and minerality while preserving the freshness needed for the expression of Pinot Noir.
The vintage
The 2021 vintage will be remembered as one of the most difficult in the recent history of Bourgogne. A devastating frost episode struck in early April, with temperatures dropping between -5 and -8°C over several consecutive nights. The buds, which had emerged early after an exceptionally mild March, were severely affected. Côte de Beaune suffered particularly from these frosts. The following months brought their share of challenges, with cool, rainy weather encouraging the development of fungal diseases. Fortunately, August was drier with cool nights, allowing the remaining grapes to reach satisfactory ripeness. Harvest began on September 15 under bright sunshine. Despite low yields, the quality of the rigorously selected grapes proved to be high.
Winemaking and aging
Domaine Chanson applies a winemaking philosophy based on infusion, favoring minimal intervention and respect for the fruit. For the Beaune 1er Cru "Clos des Marconnets" 2021, the grapes were hand-harvested with meticulous selection. The entire crop was vinified as whole clusters. After rapid cooling of the grapes upon arrival at the winery, a cold pre-fermentation maceration was carried out. Fermentation was conducted parcel by parcel with manual punch-downs. Aging continued for seventeen to nineteen months in French oak barrels, around 30% of which were new, adding a subtle oak touch without masking the expression of the terroir.
