Vinum

Reductive nose, cherries, blueberries; taut palate, slightly sticky tannins supporting the fruit, juicy acidity, medium length. Solid, if not great.

Decanter

Medium-deep ruby-purple in appearance. Expressive floral nose with pencil shavings, noble wood and bright cassis. The palate is fresh and precise, with juicy red fruit, hints of tobacco and citrus zest. Fine-grained, polished tannins support a harmonious structure. Already delightful, but built to age gracefully. 5% of Petit Verdot completes the blend.

Jancis Robinson

James Lawther MW

60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample. Attractive spice and dark-fruit nose. Supple attack. Light but present mid-palate fruit. Reasonable length and persistence. (JL)

Le Figaro Vin

Like shimmering garnet satin, the nose reveals gentle notes of ripe red fruits (raspberry, cranberry) that fade and play hide-and-seek with floral aromas, coming and going at their whim. The palate is fresh and tender, with a rather luminous, well-balanced texture.

Vertdevin

The nose offers juiciness and concentration, with tangy yet ripe fruits (wild cherry, morello cherry, raspberry, crisp strawberry), a fairly pronounced but not dominant spicy side (licorice, nutmeg, a touch of vanilla), as well as toasted wood and coffee in the background, joined by wild mint, blackcurrant leaf, and cornflower. The palate is tangy (morello cherry, red cherry, cranberries, wild cherry, raspberry), with tasty spicy and toasted notes (licorice, vanilla, toasted hazelnut, a hint of coffee), refreshed by wild mint. The tannins are fine yet quite firm. Good length, juiciness, and delicacy.

Description

A Pessac-Léognan Grand Cru Classé combining freshness and elegance

The estate

Founded in the 13th century, Château Carbonnieux is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux, located in Léognan in the Pessac-Léognan appellation. The vineyard extends over 92 hectares, divided between red and white grape varieties. Currently managed by Eric and Philibert Perrin, the estate stands out for its commitment to sustainable viticulture and its historical innovations, notably the early use of barrels for white wines, while preserving the medieval heritage of the château.

The vineyard

Château Carbonnieux oversees a vineyard that comes from vines averaging 26 years old, grown on the emblematic terroirs of Pessac-Léognan. These plots benefit from meticulous management, with particular attention paid to soil cover techniques and leaf removal. The HVE level 3 (Version 4) certification attests to the estate's commitment to sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices.

The vintage

In 2024, the very early bud break is followed by a cool and wet spring, slowing down the vegetative cycle. The flowering at the end of May takes place under good conditions, with little shatter. The summer, marked by moderate water stress and few high temperatures, promotes slow and balanced maturation.

Vinification and aging

Hand harvesting with a triple selection of berries before and after destemming. Fermentation for 10 days in stainless steel tanks. 30 days of maceration. Barreling before aging in barrels, 30% of which are new.

Grape varieties

The Château Carbonnieux Rouge 2024 is a blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon, 30% merlot, 5% cabernet franc and 5% petit verdot.
