The 2004 Climens is beginning to open up nicely—no surprise given that this Barsac always needs a decade in bottle. The nose has a delicacy that is uncommon for a youthful Climens, unfurling with subtle scents of caramelized butter, dried honey, mint, and lemon thyme, yet it is immediately identifiable as Climens. The palate is viscous on entry, with Climens’ trademark spiciness lurking beneath the surface. This is very harmonious and focused—probably just beginning to enter its drinking plateau. I suspect it will never reach the heights of the 2001 or 2009, but it is a very commendable “second-tier” Climens. Drink now–2035. Tasted February 2014.

Shows apricot tart, with hints of candied lemons on the nose. Full-bodied and medium sweet, with lovely concentration and a lemony, spicy, almost flinty aftertaste. Impressive for the vintage. Very lively and zingy on the finish. Best after 2009.

The 2004 Climens has a strict bouquet that is overshadowed by the superior 2005, a little drier and more timid, candle wax and lanolin permeating the light honeyed fruit. The palate is better with quince, saffron, white pepper and a touch of chlorine. A little bitterness towards the finish lends freshness. Somewhat awkward, yet fascinating. Tasted at the Climens vertical at the château in April 2022.

Ready to go, the freshness here perks up the butterscotch, candied orange rind, tropical fruits, vanilla and apricot sensations. Never the most concentrated Sauternes, but always the most refined; this is really showing well today and could get even better with time.

Medium yellow with lime-green nuances, bright. Still quite closed, it feels a little cool and shows vegetal notes, along with spicy botrytis and barely ripe apricots. On the palate, fine creamy breadth, but it lacks aromas and drive; the finish shows subtle capsule notes.

148 grams of residual sugar, 4.1 acidity. Quite a pale, brilliant yellow. Delicate, very fine botrytis, perfumed and filigreed. On the palate, juicy, almost light, showing a well-supporting, refreshing acidity, focused length. (18/20). 10: Medium yellow, linden-green nuances, luminous. Still rather closed, seems somewhat cool with herbal notes, spicy botrytis, barely ripe apricots. On the palate, fine volume, creamy, lacks a bit of aromatics and play, discreet capsule notes on the finish.

Fresh, fragrant, fruity bouquet with apricot, almond, vanilla and fine botrytis. Velvety, balanced, and fresh on the palate with pronounced sweetness, good acidity, and full aromatics featuring grapefruit. Very long, fresh finish. 19/20 2014 - 2040

Pale gold. Vanilla-tinged oak, rich, long, refined but less complete than the 2005. Great future ahead thanks to its stability in air. As is often the case in Barsac, a slight reduction makes the nose a bit firmer at this stage, and the wine should be decanted a good three hours in advance!

Le Figaro Vin

This great Barsac shows remarkable complexity, combining both elegance and structure. The length is superb and the finish magnificent. The wine smooths over the shortcomings of the 2004 vintage.

Pale color. Fruity but simple nose. Even after 24 hours open, it delivers nothing! Caressing palate without exuberance, finishing rather mute and simpler than I would have thought on the finish. The next day, the wine showed the same austere behavior. So, I don’t believe cellaring will bring it anything.

This wine is well balanced, rich and unctuous, the sweetness and denseness so carefully blended with acidity, orange zest and dry botrytis. It is a gorgeous, ripe wine, intense but retaining its freshness.

Description

Tasting characteristics and advice for Château Climens 2004

Tasting

Color
This 2004 vintage reveals a pale gold hue, bright and luminous, reflecting the hallmark elegance of Barsac’s great sweet wines.

Nose
The nose displays lovely aromatic complexity dominated by notes of fresh citrus and mango. Hints of honey, white flowers and subtle vanilla nuances complete this refined bouquet, which gradually opens up with aeration.

Palate
On the palate, this wine charms with its remarkable balance between silky sweetness and vibrant freshness. The attack reveals a generous, creamy texture, carried by aromas of exotic fruits and candied citrus. The structure shows a fine backbone that supports the wine’s richness, while the finish lingers at length with honeyed notes and a mineral freshness characteristic of the appellation.

Food and wine pairings

This Château Climens 2004 pairs beautifully with foie gras, whether served as a terrine or pan-seared. It also matches fruit-based desserts such as apricot or peach tarts, as well as blue-veined cheeses such as Roquefort, whose aromatic intensity finds a fine balance with the wine’s sweetness.

Serving and cellaring

This Château Climens 2004 is ideally enjoyed at a temperature between 10 and 12°C. The wine can be appreciated now and will continue to evolve favorably for many years under good cellaring conditions.

A Premier Cru Classé from Barsac of remarkable elegance

The estate

In Barsac, Château Climens, a Premier Cru Classé in the 1855 Classification, extends over 31 hectares in a single block, on the appellation’s emblematic red sands. Owned by the Lurton family from 1971, the estate was managed by Bérénice Lurton from 1992, who became the owner in 2009. In July 2022, the majority stake was sold to Jean-Hubert Moitry, the current owner, while Jérôme Moitry serves as managing director. A pioneer of biodynamics in Bordeaux, the estate is certified organic and biodynamic.

The vineyard

Château Climens’ vineyard occupies a privileged position at the top of the Barsac appellation. The vines grow on an exceptional terroir of red sands and gravel on the surface, over a subsoil of fissured limestone that ensures optimal drainage. This distinctive geological structure, combined with the parcels’ southern exposure, creates ideal conditions for the development of noble rot. The vines, with an average age of 35 years, are farmed with deliberately limited yields to encourage grape concentration.

The vintage

The 2004 vintage stands out as an exceptional year for Bordeaux sweet wines. Weather conditions were particularly favorable, with an ideal balance between sunshine and rainfall allowing optimal ripening of the grapes. The alternation of warm days and cool nights encouraged the harmonious development of noble rot while preserving fine freshness in the berries. These conditions made it possible to harvest grapes of remarkable quality, combining concentration and balance.

Winemaking and aging

Production of Château Climens 2004 begins with hand-harvesting carried out through successive selections, choosing only bunches showing an optimal level of botrytis. After pneumatic pressing, the musts are cooled to around 8°C for settling over 24 to 48 hours. Fermentation takes place in French oak barrels, 30% of which are new, at a controlled temperature below 20°C, using indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged on total lees until Christmas, before racking and continuing barrel aging for around 18 months.
