A dry white Bordeaux that transcends the conventions of Barsac
The estate
Created in 1988 with the SCEA Château Closiot, this Bordeaux estate located in Barsac, 35 kilometers southeast of Bordeaux, farms 8 hectares of vines. A former métairie of Château Coutet in the 19th century, recognizable by its crenellated tower, the estate stands out for its limestone terroirs that favor the production of sweet wines that are both concentrated and taut. Since 2017, the property has been run by Jean-Marie Guffens, a renowned Burgundian winegrower who brings his expertise and his terroir-respectful winemaking philosophy.
The vineyard
The vineyard from which this Bordeaux Dry White Wines is produced rests on red sandy-clay soils mixed with clay-limestone deposits and gravel, all over a bed of fissured limestone. This distinctive geological composition gives the wine its distinctive minerality and characteristic tension. Located in the immediate vicinity of the Ciron, the vineyard benefits from a favorable microclimate marked by morning mists and generous sunshine in the afternoon. The grape mix is dominated by sémillon, complemented by sauvignon gris, varieties perfectly suited to expressing this limestone terroir.
The vintage
The 2019 vintage offered favorable climatic conditions, allowing the grapes to reach optimal ripeness. The balance between sunshine and freshness preserved a fine natural acidity while developing remarkable aromatic concentration. Harvesting was carried out by hand, with rigorous selection of healthy grapes intended for the production of the dry wine.
Vinification and aging
Vinification of the C de Sec 2019 is carried out partly in barrels, with around 25% new oak, while the rest is vinified in concrete vats. This approach develops the wine’s aromatic complexity and texture while preserving its freshness. Aging continues on fine lees with regular bâtonnage, bringing roundness and richness to the wine. Part of the aging is carried out in concrete vats, encouraging a pure expression of fruit and the terroir’s minerality.
Grape varieties
Sémillon (around 80%), sauvignon gris (around 20%)
