Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2016: a sensual Saint-Julien

A 2nd Classified Growth of 1855, Château Ducru-Beaucaillou is a red wine produced in the Saint-Julien appellation. The vineyard is planted on Günzian gravel. The wine is aged for 18 months on average in new oak barrels. The 2016 vintage of Château Ducru-Beaucaillou blends 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot.

This vintage was blessed by a beautiful Indian summer. After a warm, dry summer with rain arriving at the right time in mid-September, the harvest took place from September 24th to October 14th.

At tasting, the Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2016 displays a purple colour, dark and deep. The nose combines purity, subtlety and delicacy, releasing aromas of fruits and flowers (violet). On aeration, there are notes of dry black ink and graphite (due to the gravelly soil). The wine reveals sensuality on the palate, along with an elegant, juicy, precise and tasty character. The Château Ducru-Beaucaillou 2016 offers fruity (blackberries), toasted (mocha, liquorice), spicy and woody flavours. On the finish, this charming wine boasts a long persistence. A Ducru-Beaucaillou of absolute density and elegance.

Wine Advocate-Parker :
Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2016 Ducru-Beaucaillou features a wonderfully savory, earthy/meaty nose, delivering well-defined notes of tapenade, truffles, charcuterie and sautéed herbs over crème de cassis, wild blueberries and kirsch with wafts of pencil lead and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is built like a brick house with the taut, muscular fruit well framed by very firm yet very ripe and finely grained tannins, offering a quiet intensity of red fruit and mineral sparks and finishing with epic length.
