Description
The smoothness and vivacity of a Pessac-Léognan red wine
The estate
A former property located in the Pessac-Léognan appellation with irresistible charm, Château Lespault-Martillac has undergone a genuine qualitative renaissance. Since 2009, the Château Lespault-Martillac vineyard has been entrusted to the Domaine de Chevalier, Grand Cru Classé de Graves, under the direction of Olivier Bernard who, with passion and determination, has raised the property to its highest level by bringing out its exceptional terroir.
The vineyard
Château Lespault-Martillac is a Pessac-Léognan wine from a vineyard of which 8 hectares are dedicated to the production of red wines and 1.5 hectares to white wines. The vines are 40 years old on average and are planted on deep gravel soils resting on clay and gravel subsoils.
The vintage
A relatively dry and cool winter delayed the budburst of the vines, thus protecting the buds from the frost episode recorded at the beginning of April. Early flowering in mid-May preceded a particularly wet June. The vine resisted a hot, dry summer thanks to sufficient water reserves and rigorous management of the vineyard, which was in exceptional condition. The harvested grapes revealed a rare freshness and balance during vinification.
Winemaking and ageing
The grapes were harvested by hand and subjected to several meticulous sortings at harvest time and in the cellar, before and after destemming. The grapes were transported by gravity into temperature-controlled vats of 50 to 80 hl. The vinification process was accompanied by manual pumping over and punching down. Malolactic fermentation was carried out in barrels, as was the 14-month ageing period (1/3 new barrels), the first four months of which were spent on lees.
Blend
Merlot (65%)
Cabernet Sauvignon (30%)
Petit Verdot (5%).
