Description
An elegant Saint-Julien wine from an exceptional terroir in Médoc
The property
The Château Moulin Riche, located in Saint-Julien, is a 20-hectare estate acquired by the Cuvelier family in 1920. Initially the second wine of Château Léoville Poyferré, it became an independent brand in 2009, distinguished by a rigorous selection of parcels. The vineyard, mainly planted with cabernet sauvignon, merlot and petit verdot, benefits from black gravel soils and traditional viticultural practices. Under the direction of Sara Lecompte Cuvelier, the estate has been HVE 3 certified since 2017, affirming its environmental commitment.
The vineyard
The vineyard of Château Moulin Riche extends over 20 hectares in the Saint-Julien appellation. The vines, with an average age of 37 years, are planted on soils composed of "black gravel", small Garonne gravels resting on a subsoil of sand and clay. This unique composition of the terroir gives the wine its typicity and finesse characteristic of the great Saint-Julien.
Vinification and aging
Manual harvests accompanied by rigorous sorting before vinification starting with a semi-parcel selection and bioprotection with non-saccharomyces yeasts. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out with selected yeasts in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats. Malolactic fermentation takes place 25% in new barrels. The aging continues for 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% of which are new wood.
Blend
The Château Moulin Riche 2024 consists of 46% cabernet sauvignon providing structure and aging potential, 39% merlot contributing to the roundness and fruit, and 15% petit verdot adding color and aromatic complexity.
