Description
The elegance and balance of a Saint-Estèphe wine
The estate
Established in the 17th century and acquired in 1989 by the Bouchara family, Château Tour de Pez underwent a remarkable revival, driven by significant investments in both the vineyard and the cellar. Vintage after vintage, the estate has established itself among the benchmarks of the Saint-Estèphe appellation thanks to meticulous, precise, and consistent wines.
The vineyard
Located in the lieu-dit "l'Hereteyre" in Saint-Estèphe, the vineyard of Château Tour de Pez covers 18 hectares. The vines, averaging 35 years of age, benefit from a typical clay-limestone and gravelly terroir of the appellation. The estate employs soil management with grass cover and prohibits all chemical weed control, in line with its High Environmental Value (HVE) certification.
The 2023-2024 vintage
The 2023-2024 vintage was marked by an exceptionally mild and rainy winter, with temperatures 5.6°C above seasonal norms from October to March and rainfall 34% above average (1260 mm on average in the Médoc). The summer was particularly cool, with temperatures 5.7°C below seasonal averages from May to September and excess rainfall in May and September. Harvest began on September 27.
Winemaking and aging
The hand-harvested, rigorously sorted grapes are first cooled to allow low-temperature fermentation. A cold pre-fermentative maceration precedes fermentation, which is conducted by parcel. Aging lasts 18 months, with 65% in new barrels (225 and 400 liters), 28% in tanks, 5% in one-wine barrels, and 2% in stoneware jars.
Blend
The 2024 Château Tour de Pez is composed predominantly of Merlot (61%), complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon (35%) and a touch of Cabernet Franc (4%).
