Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Ripe, showing black licorice and dark plum notes wrapped around each other. This stays vivid and racy in feel, with a lively floral note and a swath of dark earth as a backdrop on the finish. Drink now through 2030. 3,333 cases made, 218 cases imported.

At first there’s a full raw-meat character with hints of graphite and spice, but as it aerates the blackberry fruit slowly expands and deepens. Full, ripe and concentrated with an impressive tannin structure. Long, chocolatey finish that is precisely delineated and has good freshness. Drink or hold.

100% Syrah. Aged for 14 months, part in tank and part in second- and third-use burgundy barrels. Cask sample. Tasted blind. Ripe, plum-laden nose. Rich fruit cake and ripe dark fruits on the palate; good freshness keeps this alive and balances the slightly warming alcohol on the rich, layered finish. (AC)

Inky dark purple core and hue. Intense and pure with crushed stone, pepper, raw meat and inky dark fruit. Concentrated and muscular with layers of blackberry, cassis, pepper, some oak appearing on the palate, well balanced with fresh acidity underneath, perfectly ripe tannins and a very long, vigorous finish.

Bettane+Desseauve

An appealing nose of black fruit paste and thyme. On the palate, the tannin is beautifully ripe, rich and caressing, with a broad finish and, above all, impeccable freshness.

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the 2019 Domaine des Grands Chemins from Delas

Tasting

Color
With an intense garnet hue, the color displays a beautiful depth, enhanced by subtle violet reflections.

Nose
The nose reveals elegant smoky and licorice notes, accompanied by generous aromas of jammy black fruits such as black cherry, blackcurrant, and blackberry. Upon aeration, the aromatic palette gains in complexity with the appearance of fresh nuances of eucalyptus and menthol.

Palate
The attack, lively and refreshing, gives way to a full and harmonious palate, carried by a soft and silky texture.

A Rhone Valley red wine that is both deep and silky

The property

Founded in 1835, the Maison Delas Frères is a reference among the wines of the northern Rhone Valley. While its purchase by the Deutz Champagne House in 1977 marks the beginning of a new era, the development of the house internationally will continue thanks to its acquisition in 1993 by the Rouzaud family, majority shareholder of the Louis Roederer group.

The vineyard

Maison Delas Frères oversees a vineyard spread over three exceptional appellations of the Rhone Valley : Crozes-Hermitage, Hermitage and Saint-Joseph. In order to magnify the expression of each of these terroirs, the vinification and aging are carried out on a parcel-by-parcel basis.

The wine

This Domaine des Grands Chemins 2018 is a Crozes-Hermitage wine made from grapes exclusively from the eponymous estate.

Vinification and aging

Manual harvest carried out on a parcel-by-parcel basis. Pre-fermentation cold maceration. Vinification in open concrete vats, accompanied by punch-downs and pump-overs. Total maceration of about 10 days. Aging for 14 months partly in vats and in Burgundy barrels of one to two wines.

Grape variety

Syrah (100%).
