Located in Barsac, in the Sauternes appellation, Château Doisy-Daëne has belonged to the Dubourdieu family since 1924. Led by three generations of winegrowers and boasting an exceptional terroir, this Classified Second Growth of 1855 produces sweet wines recognised as one of the greatest wines of Bordeaux. Since 2000, Denis Dubourdieu has been at the helm of the property.
Château Doisy-Daëne is situated on the Barsac plateau. This area is characterised by a unique geological formation. There is a thin layer of clayey sand referred to as "the red sands of the barsacais" which rest upon limestone subsoils. This porous limestone traps the rainfall during the winter and makes it available for the vines later on in the growing season. This contributes to the exceptional finesse of the wines from Château Doisy-Daëne.
L’Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne was born in 1990. This rare and exceptional cuvée resulted from an experiment carried out by Denis Dubourdieu. The latter wanted to experiment with making a cuvée from a Sauvignon Blanc with noble rot and taken to the extreme. The grapes were thus harvested at the beginning of November with a great richness in sugars, high alcohol potential and very concentrated flavours. Since 1990, only the best vintages have been produced of this wine and in very limited quantities.
The production of sweet wines at Château Doisy-Daëne requires a very thorough series of harvests to be carried out by experienced pickers in 3 to 6 passages. Only grapes that have developed the famous "noble rot" are picked, and only at the most favourable time. The juices are then extracted by a slow pressing before undergoing plot fermentation in oak barrels. A pre-blending is carried out 3 months after harvest. Ageing lasts 12 months in oak barrels.
The Extravagant de Doisy-Daëne 2020 is made with 100% Sauvignon Blanc.
