Description
Characteristics and tasting tips for the Geisberg Grand Cru 2014 from Maison Trimbach
Tasting
Appearance
The wine displays a yellow hue with golden highlights, reflecting the maturity of the vintage.
Nose
The nose opens with intense aromas of lemon and citrus, accompanied by mineral notes evoking crushed stone. Herbaceous and floral nuances complete this complex and concentrated bouquet.
Palate
On the palate, the wine reveals a full-bodied and juicy character, marked by a vibrant acidity. The texture is both substantial and precise, carried by a remarkable acidity and a saline minerality that brings tension and energy. Firm tannins provide structure, while the finish stands out for its exceptional length and growing complexity.
Food and wine pairing
This gastronomic wine pairs ideally with seafood and shellfish, particularly pan-seared scallops. It also pairs beautifully with Asian dishes featuring citrus and ginger, or with creamy chicken and mushroom preparations.
Serving and storage
The Geisberg Grand Cru 2014 can be enjoyed until 2035. It is recommended to serve it at a temperature between 50 and 54°F.
A mineral and complex Alsace Grand Cru Riesling from Maison Trimbach
The estate
Founded in 1626, Maison Trimbach embodies thirteen generations of winemaking expertise in Alsace. Based in Ribeauvillé since 1920, this independent family house today manages approximately 60 hectares of vines, supplemented by partnerships with 35 winegrowers. Internationally renowned for its dry Rieslings of remarkable precision, Trimbach is led by the 13th generation, represented by Anne, Julien, Frédérique and Pauline Trimbach. The estate has been certified organic since 2023 and favors a dry, linear style, true to the philosophy of balance that defines its wines.
The vineyard
Geisberg is one of the smallest Grand Cru vineyards in Alsace, spanning just 8.5 hectares. Located in Ribeauvillé, this terraced vineyard reaches an altitude of 350 meters and benefits from full southern exposure. The soil is composed of shelly limestone (Muschelkalk) and sandstone, giving the wine its characteristic minerality. Trimbach's vines, notably acquired in 2009 from the Couvent de Ribeauvillé, cover 2.66 hectares within this prestigious appellation. The semi-continental climate, sheltered by the Vosges Mountains, provides ideal conditions for Riesling ripening.
The vintage
The 2014 vintage is characterized by favorable conditions for producing dry Rieslings of great concentration. The year yielded excellent grape ripeness while preserving remarkable acidity, a guarantee of freshness and aging potential. These climatic conditions favored the pure expression of Geisberg's limestone terroir.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes from the Geisberg Grand Cru 2014 are gently pressed by gravity before careful settling. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at 64–68°F, without malolactic fermentation, in order to preserve the wine's natural acidity and mineral tension. Aging is carried out on fine lees in stainless steel tanks, followed by a period in old oak casks for several months. This minimalist approach aims to respect the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir.
