The estate
Quinta do Noval, mentioned in land registries as early as 1715, truly came into its own in 1894 when António José da Silva acquired and replanted the estate after phylloxera. Since 1993, the property has belonged to the AXA Millésimes group. Located in the Douro Valley near Pinhão, it spans around 100 hectares replanted in the 1990s. The only historic port wine shipper to bear the name of its estate, Quinta do Noval stands out for its pioneering centralization in the valley in 1997 and its outstanding Vintage ports, including the legendary 1931 vintage. The estate has also produced Douro wines under the name Quinta do Noval Duriense since 2004.
The vineyard
This port is made from a blend of traditional grape varieties from the Mendiz Valley in the Duriense. The vines, cultivated using the region’s traditional methods, benefit from the exceptional climatic conditions of this Portuguese valley renowned for its great ports.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes are traditionally foot-trodden in stone lagares, allowing for gentle extraction and steady maceration. Noval Tawny 50 Years Old is aged exclusively in old 640-liter oak casks known as cascos. This extended maturation in seasoned wood gives this port its distinctive amber color and develops an aromatic profile of great finesse. Bottling was carried out in 2024 under the technical direction of Carlos Agrellos.
