Owned by the Sogrape Group, one of the most important Portuguese wine producers, Casa Ferreirinha is synonymous with one word: outstanding. Founded in the 18th century by Bernardo Ferreira, the house is renowned for its in-depth knowledge of the Douro vineyards and for the quality of its wines. Casa Ferreirinha was the first winery in Portugal to produce non-fortified Douro red wines.
Produced in DOC Douro, Reserva Especial by Casa Ferreirinha is a red wine from the Douro region in northern Portugal. Complex, rich and with a classical style, this Portuguese wine was born over 50 years ago. Even today, Reserva Especial is one of Casa Ferreirinha's signature wines and has built up the estate's reputation. This wine is only made during the finest years.
2009 will be remembered as a very hot and dry year. Due to an extremely hot summer, the harvest took place earlier than usual in order to preserve the balance, harmony and aromatic intensity of the fruit along with high quality tannins.
Vinification and ageing
Reserva Especial 2009 by Casa Ferreirinha was vinified at Quinta da Leda by Luis Sottomayor. The grapes for this wine come from Quinta da Leda and nearby high-altitude vineyards. The grapes were vinified in two different ways: either separately, preserving the identity of the grape varieties, or together with a selection made in the vineyard. After a complete de-stemming and gentle pressing, the musts are transferred to stainless steel tanks for a long alcoholic fermentation and maceration.
Reserva Especial 2009 Casa Ferreirinha was aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels at Vila Nova de Gaia. Throughout the ageing process, the wines are constantly monitored and analysed. Before bottling, a light fining is carried out. A natural deposit may form due to the absence of a cold stabilisation treatment.
