Description

An iconic Grande Champagne Cognac cuvée born from unique expertise

The estate

Founded in 1724 in Charente by Rémy Martin, the eponymous Cognac house experienced international growth from 1810 under the leadership of Paul-Émile Rémy Martin, the 4th generation at the head of the family business. Passionate about astronomy, he chose the centaur as the brand’s logo, in reference to his zodiac sign (Sagittarius).

Associated with Paul-Émile Rémy Martin since 1910, André Renaud became President of the house in 1924 and launched the Fine Champagne Rémy Martin VSOP cognac in 1927. Produced exclusively by the house, this cuvée is crafted from a blend of different crus from Petite Champagne and Grande Champagne, two of the six crus that make up the Cognac production area.

Since 1960, illustrious personalities have shaped the history of the house Rémy Martin, including André Giraud, André Hériard Dubreuil, Georges Clot and Pierrette Trichet, the first female cellar master in Cognac. Since 2014, cellar master Baptiste Loiseau has perpetuated the tradition of excellence that has driven the house for nearly three centuries.

The Cognac House Rémy Martin is renowned for the singularity, richness and refinement of its cuvées.

The vineyard

The vineyards of the Domaines Rémy Martin were, in 2012, the first in the Charente region to be certified HVE (High Environmental Value). Since 2020, all of the house’s partners have been committed to sustainable viticulture and 50% of their vineyards are certified HVE.

An exceptional cognac

Emblematic for its refinement and richness, the Louis XIII cuvée results from a rigorous selection and blend of eaux-de-vie crafted from several grape varieties grown in Grande Champagne, a prestigious cru within the production area of Cognac, renowned for its chalky terroir and mild, temperate climate.

Created in 1874 by Paul-Émile Rémy Martin, Louis XIII is a cuvée of excellence aged for many years in oak casks mainly sourced from the forests of Limousin. For nearly 150 years, Louis XIII has embodied the savoir-faire and expertise of each cellar master who, from generation to generation, creates a unique blend from precious eaux-de-vie, perpetuating a distinctive and refined signature.

A symbol of the French art de vivre and the unique expertise of several generations of cellar masters, this exceptional spirit is housed in a decanter designed by the master crystal artisans of Baccarat, whose design is inspired by a 16th‑century flask discovered at the site of the Battle of Jarnac. With its almost unchanged design, its circular silhouette inspired by Renaissance art and its fleur-de-lys evoking the Louis XIII style, this flask has adorned the tables of visionaries and witnessed key moments in history. Today, each decanter, mouth-blown and hand-shaped by master glassmakers, is a unique piece whose pure glass refracts light and enhances the liquid with crystal clarity, as if time itself were suspended within it.

Among the most prestigious cognacs beyond borders, Louis XIII draws its singularity from its multiple Grande Champagne eaux-de-vie, each reflecting an era and each drop celebrating a unique heritage as well as a visionary spirit.

This exceptional bottle in a 3‑liter format is presented here in a superb trunk including:
- a pipette, a tool traditionally reserved for cellar masters and passed down from generation to generation
- a decanter designed by the master crystal artisans of Baccarat, inspired by a 16th‑century flask discovered at the site of the Battle of Jarnac
- four crystal tasting glasses designed by the creator Christophe Pillet
- a booklet and a letter written by the cellar master
- an invitation to visit the Rémy Martin House in Cognac.

Cognac among the most prestigious across borders, Louis XIII derives its singularity from its multiple eaux-de-vie, each reflecting a different era.

Vinification and aging

Meticulous craftsmanship

The partner winegrowers of the Rémy Martin house ensure rigorous monitoring of their vineyards as well as harvesting at full ripeness. After pressing, the clear juices undergo a one‑week fermentation. No additives are used before distillation, which takes place between November and the end of March.

The distillation of the eaux-de-vie is carried out on the lees in two stages. The second distillation produces a spirit at 70 degrees. Out of 1,000 samples, sometimes only around a dozen are selected, thanks to the expertise of the cellar master and his tasting committee, to be included in the Louis XIII blend.

Aging takes place in tierçons, oak casks from Limousin originally intended for transporting cognac, whose porosity and distinctive tannins are perfectly suited to the aging of eaux-de-vie. Each year, the cellar master’s work of selecting and blending the finest eaux-de-vie represents a true legacy passed on to future generations.
