Since 1772, Maison Veuve Clicquot has embodied excellence and innovation at the heart of Champagne. Heir to a keen sense of audacity, it has managed to impose its own style, notably through its emblematic rosé champagne.
The Origins of Veuve Clicquot's Rosé Champagne
At the dawn of the 19th century, the Champagne region experienced creative effervescence. In 1818, Barbe-Nicole Clicquot, nicknamed the "Grande Dame of Champagne," revolutionized tradition by creating one of the first rosé d'assemblage champagnes. Veuve Clicquot opted for an unprecedented method: blending a red wine from quality pinot noir with traditional white wines. This founding gesture permanently marked the history of rosé champagne, establishing this cuvée as a symbol of audacity and finesse.
The Production of Rosé Champagne
There are two main methods for producing rosé champagne, but the creation of Veuve Clicquot Rosé is primarily based on the rosé d'assemblage technique, the true signature of Champagne. This method consists of mixing white Champagne wine with a small quantity of red wine produced locally, generally from pinot noir or pinot meunier.
The rosé champagne from Maison Veuve Clicquot is born from a rigorous selection of grapes including an important portion of reserve wines. The blend consists mainly of pinot noir, which structures the cuvée, complemented by chardonnay for elegance and pinot meunier depending on the cuvées. The singularity of Veuve Clicquot rosé champagne lies in the addition of approximately still red wine from the best pinot noirs of Bouzy or Ambonnay.
After blending, the wine is bottled for the foam formation, then aged in the House's chalk cellars, thus developing smoothness and complexity.
