A coastal Pinot Noir from Chile’s Limarí Valley with a Burgundy-like character

The estate

Founded in 2002 by Guillermo Luksic, the estate Viña Tabali is the first modern winery in the Limarí Valley, located in the Coquimbo region in northern Chile. The vineyards span 151 hectares, spread across three plots with contrasting terroirs: Talinay, a coastal vineyard twelve kilometers from the Pacific Ocean on marine limestone soils unique in the country, and Río Hurtado, an Andean parcel at 1,600 meters altitude on volcanic subsoil. Under the direction of Nicolas Luksic, the estate grows Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Pinot Noir, and Carménère. A minimalist approach is adopted to highlight the authentic expression of the terroirs, enhanced by the influence of the Camanchaca sea fog.

The vineyard

The Talinay vineyard is located in the Limarí Valley, just twelve kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, on the edge of Fray Jorge National Park, designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The terroir lies at 150 meters altitude on limestone slopes and rests on a porous, fissured limestone soil originating from an ancient marine terrace and rich in calcium carbonate, which acts as a natural water regulator. The site benefits from a cool coastal climate with a constant sea breeze and is the coolest zone in Limarí, where summer highs reach around 23.5°C. These special conditions delay the harvest by two to three weeks compared with other coastal Chilean areas.

Winemaking and aging

After manual harvesting, 70% of the grapes were destemmed, while 30% were vinified as whole clusters. Talinay Pinot Noir 2021 benefited from a seven-day cold maceration at 8°C, followed by fermentation with indigenous yeasts in small stainless-steel tanks at a temperature between 20 and 26°C. During fermentation, gentle manual pump-overs were carried out. A short post-fermentation maceration gave this wine from Coquimbo more body. The entire cuvée underwent malolactic fermentation before twelve months of aging in French oak barrels from Fontainebleau, Jupille, Bertrange, Tronçais, and Allier.
