Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for the Saint-Joseph "Lombard" 2023 from Yves Cuilleron
Tasting notes
Colour
In the glass, this white wine reveals a clear, luminous hue, enhanced by delicate golden highlights that reflect its lovely maturity.
Nose
Particularly expressive and thoroughly elegant, the aromatic bouquet reveals superb complexity. It opens with aromas of white peach, ripe pear and white flowers, heightened by notes of fresh almond and a subtle toasted touch. With aeration, nuances of guava, white pepper and pastry come through to enrich the whole.
Palate
The attack is broad and fleshy, offering a rich texture perfectly balanced by a refreshing tension. The subtle ageing allows the fruit and a lovely minerality to shine through. The long, vibrant finish stands out with noble bitterness, a thirst-quenching hint of salinity and touches of candied citrus.
Food and wine pairing
Highly versatile, this white wine is superb with seafood such as scallops, monkfish or fish in a light sauce. It also pairs beautifully with white meats, such as chicken supreme with morels, as well as pressed cheeses.
Service and storage
Ready to enjoy now, the Lombard 2023 will reach its peak between 2026 and 2031. It can be cellared for enjoyment until around 2033.
The authentic expression of a great white wine from the Rhône Valley
The estate
Founded in 1920 by Claude Cuilleron in Chavanay, the estate has established itself as a benchmark reference of the northern Rhône Valley. Since 1987, Yves Cuilleron, the current owner and visionary figure, has run the estate with remarkable dedication. Practising meticulous viticulture on steep hillsides, he has managed to raise the estate to great heights while preserving traditional methods. True to his convictions, Yves Cuilleron crafts authentic terroir wines, marked by a strong identity and a deep respect for the environment.
The vineyard
Hailing from the Saint-Joseph appellation, this single-parcel cuvée comes from a selection of old vines planted above the Bois Lombard lieu-dit. The terroir is characterised by sandy, granitic soils that give the wine its distinctive minerality and freshness. Grown on terraces on steep slopes that cannot be mechanised, the vineyard benefits from rigorous manual work and an environmentally conscious approach, certified High Environmental Value and transitioning towards organic farming.
Winemaking and ageing
After manual harvesting and careful sorting, alcoholic and malolactic fermentation of the Lombard 2023 takes place in barrels through the exclusive action of indigenous yeasts. The wine is then aged for 9 months, split between 30-hectolitre foudres and Burgundy barrels. It rests on its total lees, without any racking, and undergoes regular lees stirring to develop its texture and aromatic complexity.
