Description

Tasting Notes and Tips for the Emma Bonarda 2019 from Zuccardi

Tasting

Color

The color displays a deep, vibrant purple hue.

Nose

The nose reveals pure aromas of raspberry and fresh blackberry, accompanied by floral notes in which violet expresses itself with elegance. A slightly candied undertone adds nuance, while herbal hints of chlorophyll and orange peel emerge with aeration.

Palate

On the palate, the wine is compact, with a juicy, chalky drive. The balance rests on a freshness that brings energy without becoming overly sharp. Mineral tannins provide structure, while flavors of macerated cherry and plum unfold. The chalky, stony finish extends the tasting with finesse.

Food and wine pairings

This wine pairs perfectly with grilled red meats, herb-roasted lamb with Mediterranean herbs, and game dishes. It also matches very well with pasta in tomato-and-herb sauce, grilled or roasted vegetables, as well as empanadas and asado, traditional Argentine dishes.

Serving and cellaring

This Emma Bonarda 2019 can be enjoyed now and through around 2030, according to critics.

An high-altitude Argentine wine combining mineral freshness and aromatic complexity

The estate

Founded in 1963 by engineer Alberto "Tito" Zuccardi in Maipú, the Zuccardi estate is now run by Sebastián Zuccardi, representing the third generation. Based in the Valle de Uco, the property spans six vineyards located between 1,050 and 1,700 meters above sea level. Globally recognized, this Argentine estate was named the best winery in the world for three consecutive years and received the title of New World Winery of the Year in 2022. Sebastián Zuccardi favors an approach focused on expressing terroir and winemaking in concrete, with minimal intervention.

The vineyard

Emma Bonarda 2019 comes in equal parts from two distinct sites in the Valle de Uco: Paraje Altamira at 1,100 meters above sea level and San Pablo at 1,400 meters. The soils of Paraje Altamira are made up of stone conglomerates and granitic gravels covered with calcareous material, creating a pronounced mineral expression. San Pablo, located at higher altitude with a cold, extreme climate, features alluvial soils with a layer of medium-sized gravel beneath about one meter of topsoil, also enriched with limestone. These two terroirs bring minerality and aromatic freshness to the wine, respectively.

The vintage

The 2019 vintage stood out for its fast, demanding ripening while producing grapes of exceptional health and quality. These conditions allowed high-altitude fruit to achieve full phenolic ripeness while preserving naturally high acidity and remarkable aromatic complexity.

Winemaking and aging

Emma Bonarda 2019 was vinified in concrete tanks with native yeasts, preserving the authenticity and purity of the fruit. Aging also took place in concrete, with no oak aging at all, in order to respect the varietal expression and the character of this Mendoza terroir.
