Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for Aalto 2024 from Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos
Tasting notes
Colour
The wine shows an intense colour, with purple hues and a ruby rim.
Nose
The nose stands out for its concentrated fruit, with ripe cherries, plums and dark berries, accompanied by delicate spicy notes. Hints of cedar, balsamic herbs and light caramel, inherited from barrel ageing, add further depth.
Palate
The attack is fresh, the volume balanced and the tannins rounded. The palate, ample and creamy, extends into a persistent finish where ripe fruit, spice and touches of fine oak can be found.
Food and Wine Pairing
This red wine pairs well with roasted or grilled red meats, such as a rib of beef. It is also suited to roast lamb, game and mature cheeses, notably a sheep's milk cheese such as Manchego.
Serving and Cellaring
Aalto 2024 benefits from being decanted before serving, which helps the aromas open up and softens the tannins.
A Red Wine from Ribera del Duero Made from Old Vines
The Estate
Aalto Bodegas y Viñedos was founded in 1999 in Ribera del Duero, in Castilla y León, on the initiative of winemaker Mariano García, former technical director of Vega Sicilia, and Javier Zaccagnini. The Masaveu and Nozaleda families joined the company as shareholders in 2006, alongside Mariano García, who continues to oversee technical direction. Based in Quintanilla de Arriba since 2005, the gravity-flow bodega works old vines from Ribera del Duero.
The Vineyard
This Ribera del Duero wine comes from old vines of local grape varieties, spread across several villages in the provinces of Burgos and Valladolid. Many are head-trained (gobelet) and planted with old, low-yielding clones. The soils, which vary (clay-limestone, sandy-loam, stony), are poor and well drained. The vineyard lies on a high-altitude plateau, under a continental climate marked by wide temperature variations.
Vinification and Ageing
The grapes are hand-harvested in small crates, then sorted on arrival at the bodega. They are chilled in a cold room before being gravity-fed into tanks, which limits the use of pumps. Fermentation takes place in concrete, wooden and steel tanks, the latter being truncated-cone shaped and designed by the bodega. Each plot is vinified and aged separately before the final blend. This Spanish wine is aged in French and American oak barrels.
Grape Variety
Tempranillo (100%).
