The estate
Founded in 1979 by Alain Gras, the eponymous estate now spans around 15 hectares spread across Saint-Romain, Meursault and Auxey-Duresses. Since 2020, Arthur Gras, Alain’s son and the fifth generation of winegrowers, has joined his father to perpetuate the excellence of this Burgundian estate. A true ambassador for the Saint-Romain appellation, the estate has established itself as an essential benchmark, with its wines featured in 21 of France’s 27 three-Michelin-star restaurants.
The vineyard
The Saint-Romain vineyard enjoys an exceptional geographic setting, perched at the foot of a limestone cliff on the Côte de Beaune. The estate’s plots occupy the highest parts of the hillside, at elevations between 280 and 400 meters. The soils, made up of limestone and marl enriched with Lias-era clay, give the wines their distinctive minerality. The "Vieilles Vignes" vines are over thirty years old and benefit from an ideal south and southeast exposure.
The vintage
The 2023 vintage in Bourgogne was marked by warm, sunny conditions that favored optimal ripening of the grapes. Rainy spells in August helped preserve the balance between concentration and freshness. These conditions produced grapes with solid ripeness while maintaining the characteristic acidity of high-altitude terroirs.
Vinification and aging
Harvesting for the Saint-Romain Village "Vieilles Vignes" 2023 is carried out by hand, with rigorous selection of the bunches. Vinification involves slow fermentation to preserve aromatic expression. Aging takes place in French oak barrels for around twelve months, with 20% new oak, followed by a period in tank before bottling.
