James Suckling

Very complex nose with lots of spice and some savory notes. Deep and densely structured, but so refined. Builds to a bold crescendo, yet is always very precise, making a strong argument for why the Grand Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin have gained a special reputation. Drink or hold.

The 2020 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a charming bouquet with impressive purity: well-defined, a little Mazoyères in style, briar and light loamy scents emerging with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a sapid entry. There's more black than red fruit, with marine-influenced, grainy tannins and a touch of cracked black pepper towards the finish. This stylish Charmes-Chambertin should age well in bottle. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

Description

Characteristics and tasting advice for the Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2020 from Albert Bichot

Tasting

Nose
The aromatic bouquet reveals elegant notes of raspberry, redcurrant, and violet. With a few years of aging, these primary aromas will evolve towards more animal and spicy scents while maintaining great freshness.

Palate
In the mouth, power and elegance skillfully combine to offer a voluptuous sensation. The structure is both broad and deep, with melted tannins that perfectly support the vibrant fruit.

Food and wine pairings

This grand cru pairs perfectly with red meats and game. Aged and powerful cheeses like Époisses or Soumaintrain will also enhance this exceptional wine.

Service and aging

Serve between 16°C and 18°C. Aeration in a decanter for an hour is recommended for young vintages. This wine can be stored in the cellar between 2030 and 2040 approximately, or even longer under good storage conditions.

A Grand Cru from Burgundy combining power and elegance

The property

Founded in 1831 by Bernard Bichot in Monthélie, the Albert Bichot house has established itself in Beaune, becoming one of the last family trading houses in Burgundy. Under the direction of Albéric Bichot, sixth generation, it now owns over 100 hectares spread over six prestigious estates, covering major appellations such as Chablis, Côte de Nuits, and Beaujolais. The house stands out for its sustainable practices, including organic farming, and its parcel vinification, guaranteeing an authentic expression of Burgundian terroirs.

The vineyard

The Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine grand crus of Gevrey-Chambertin, located in the prestigious Côte de Nuits. This cuvée comes from a selection of plots resting on a clay-limestone soil, enriched with silts and gravelly scree in the upper part.

Vinification and aging

Fermentation for 20 to 25 days in oak conical vats. The aging then takes place entirely in oak barrels, 50% of which are new, for a period of 14 to 16 months.

Grape variety

100% pinot noir.
