Description

A complex and structured Veneto red wine by Allegrini

The producer

Allegrini, the largest producer in the Valpolicella appellation, is one of the most prestigious Italian wine producers in the world.

Established since the 16th century, the Allegrini family is at the head of a vineyard in the Veneto region which covers over 100 hectares.

The Allegrini family's Amarone wines reflect a unique know-how that has been handed down from generation to generation, injecting these wines with both a strong identity and a unique style.

The vineyard

Allegrini's 2016 Poja is a wine made from a rigorous selection of vineyards, benefiting from a south-east exposure and located at an altitude of 320 metres above sea level. The vines are on average 42 years old and are planted on clay and chalk soil.

The vintage

The 2016 vintage was marked by satisfactory weather conditions overall despite a few rainy spells during spring, which lead to taking rapid and thorough preventive measures in order to protect the vines. From mid-June onwards, the weather settled during the summer months, with high temperatures not exceeding 35°C. The day-to-night temperature variations, particularly during the veraison period, combined with sufficient water reserves enabled the sugar levels to increase while still maintaining levels of acidity and thus developing the specific aromatic characteristics of each grape variety. The harvest was carried out late, at the beginning of October, to ensure an optimally ripe crop. This exceptional vintage is seductive in its balance and elegance.

The vinification and ageing

Following destemming and crushing, the grapes are fermented for 12 to 15 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with pumping over. Malolactic fermentation. An initial 20-month ageing period in new Allier barrels, followed by 8 months in large Slavonian oak barrels is completed by 10 months of bottle ageing.

The blend

Allegrini's 2016 Poja is a 100% Corvina Veronese.

The tasting

This fine Veneto wine will seduce you with its finesse and lively tension. The perfect expression of this noble grape variety, Corvina Veronese, harmoniously blends intense fruity (cherry, blackcurrant), spicy (white pepper) and floral (iris) notes with savoury balsamic notes.

Food and wine pairing

Poja will complement roasted red meat, game, mature cheeses and white or black truffles.

Service

For an optimal tasting experience, serve at 18°C, having opened the bottle an hour before serving.

Storage

Allegrini's Poja 2016 can be cellared until around 2036, enabling it to express its full range of aromas.
