The Estate

Founded at the beginning of the 19th century in Sancerre by Alphonse Mellot, the family estate has been passed down through generations. The Mellot family, already mentioned in archives as early as the 16th century, enjoyed a reputation as winegrowers and wine merchants. In 1698, King Louis XIV even chose César Mellot as a viticultural advisor.

Tradition holds that the eldest of each generation bears the founder’s first name. Even today, Alphonse Mellot senior and junior continue this legacy, producing high-quality Sancerre from a single 30-hectare vineyard.

Vineyard

La Moussière comes from a 34-hectare Sancerre vineyard, cultivated according to organic and biodynamic principles. The vines, aged between 4 and 40 years, are planted on Saint-Doulchard marls (caillottes) facing south/southwest.

Winemaking and Aging

After harvest, the bunches are sorted on a table and then conveyed to the presses by belt, where they undergo sequential pneumatic pressing as whole clusters. The must is then clarified for around 48 hours at below 10°C. Fermentation takes place half in tanks and half in new barrels. This Sancerre white wine is aged on fine lees for 7 to 8 months before being bottled at the estate.

Grape Variety

100% Sauvignon Blanc.
