2024 En Primeur in Alsace: A Year of Climatic Challenges
2024, a Vintage Shaped by Unpredictable Weather
The winter was mild and gentle, leading to early budburst, with no significant spring frost episodes. However, spring was characterized by persistent cool rainfall, disrupting flowering (causing coulure and millerandage) and increasing downy mildew pressure. Summer alternated between heat, storms, and hail events, while a drier August allowed for proper veraison. Cooler and wetter conditions in September slowed the ripening process, resulting in a later vintage. Despite these challenges, constant vigilance ensured a satisfactory sanitary state in the vineyards.
The Harvest: Between Climatic Challenges and Quality Berries
Harvesting began at the end of August for Crémants and continued from early September for still wines. Staggered through early October depending on grape variety maturity, the harvest took place under sometimes unpredictable weather. Despite changing conditions, the grapes generally maintained good sanitary quality, enabling meticulous sorting in the vineyard. Yields were lower than in 2023, impacted by poor flowering and mildew pressure. Nevertheless, the berries harvested were concentrated and well-balanced.
