Description
The structure and balance of a Chassagne-Montrachet wine from a unique terroir
The estate
Daughter of one of the greatest winegrowing families in Burgundy, Francine Picard took over the estate historically run by her father in the late 1990s. Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve extends across the villages of Chassagne-Montrachet, Puligny-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin, in the heart of the finest climats and terroirs of winegrowing Burgundy.
Driven by a desire for synergy between the land and the wines, Francine Picard cultivates her plots in accordance with the principles of biodynamics and works passionately and with the utmost care to produce wines that reflect the identity of their terroir.
Coming from a 110-hectare vineyard farmed using "agro-ecology", the chardonnay and pinot noir of Domaine Au Pied du Mont Chauve are renowned for their quality, precision and elegance.
Since May 2019, Antoine Lepetit de la Bigne, a specialist in biodynamic viticulture, has joined the team of this illustrious Burgundy estate as Technical Director.
The vineyard
"Les Chaumées" from Au Pied du Mont Chauve is a Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru wine from a plot that is singular in more ways than one. The estate is in fact the only producer of red wine on this terroir located mid-slope, with an eastern exposure. The 50-year-old vines grow on soils composed of clay and limestone.
The vintage
The beginning of 2022 in Burgundy was marked by frost in early April, affecting a vineyard partially protected by a late bud break. The vines then faced a particularly hot and dry summer. Despite these extreme conditions, 2022 reveals a qualitative and generous vintage, giving rise to wines whose concentration and balance combine with a delicate marriage of suppleness and complexity.
Vinification and ageing
Harvested by hand, the grapes are rigorously sorted on a sorting table before complete destemming. Traditional vinification in open temperature-controlled vats. Ageing for 18 months, including 12 months in wood (Burgundy barrels and foudres).
Blend
This Chassagne-Montrachet 1er cru "Les Chaumées" 2022 from Au Pied du Mont Chauve is 100% pinot noir.
