Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

This elegant red shows lovely length and integration and feels fresh and focused despite its 10 years of aging on release. Mineral-driven, with an underpinning of iron and loamy earth to the mix of dried cherry and red currant fruit, bitter herb, cocoa powder, and singed orange peel notes. Fine, taut tannins firm the well-spiced finish. Corvina and Rondinella. Best from 2027 through 2040. 5,000 cases made, 1,350 cases imported.

Wine Enthusiast

Jeff Porter

A bold statement of hedonistic pleasure, this late-release Amarone cranks up every dial to maximum impact. Picture the richest pie filling imaginable, swirled with jammy preserves and cream, all woven into a luxuriously viscous texture. The extended bottle age has worked its magic, wrapping all this intensity in silk sheets, though subtlety isn't in this wine's vocabulary. For those who embrace the "more is more" philosophy, this delivers pure, unrestrained pleasure with the confidence of a rock star at full volume.

Decanter

Comforting aromas of dusty wood, dried red fruits, dark chocolate and some subtle floral lift lead to a superbly textural and airy palate which gives energy and space to the concentrated red and black fruits. Breezy and fragrant, lifted and poised, it's a masterclass of harmony and elegance, with a lovely salty edge and some crunchy berries. The complexity will come with time.

James Suckling

A vivid ruby color with a garnet tinge and a super-restrained nose of licorice, oak bark, smoke, wood, cigar box, leather, dark chocolate, crushed violets and prunes. Freshness and subtlety. Full-bodied and elegant on the palate thanks to ripe, filigree tannins, long acidity, and a toasty, savory finish. One of the great Amarone. Corvina and Rondinella. Ready to drink now, but built for the long haul.

Vinous

Eric Guido

Cedary spices mix with shavings of dark chocolate and crushed black raspberries as the 2015 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico entices from the glass. Cool-toned and crisp, it offers silken textures offset by depths of tart red berry fruits and balsamic tones. A pleasantly bitter sensation puckers the cheeks, as fine tannins saturate and nuances of sour citrus fade. Despite the warm vintage, Bertani has found a beautiful balance in its 2015 Amarone.

The elegance and expression of a great Amarone della Valpolicella Classico wine

The estate

The story of Bertani, one of the most important producers in Veneto, began in 1857, when the two brothers, Giovan Battista and Gaetano Bertani decided to settle in Quinto Di Valpantena, north of Verona, Italy. A student of the famous Professor Guyot, Gaetano Bertani endeavoured to apply the techniques learned in Bordeaux to Italian wines, in the spirit of this period of innovation that marked the advances of modern viticulture, in the vineyard and in the cellar. In 1958, Bertani became one of the most famous Italian names by marketing a wine that has become iconic, Amarone.

The vineyard

At the head of a 200-hectare vineyard located in one of the most prestigious areas of Valpolicella around Verona, the wines of the Bertani estate demonstrate all the typicity of the great terroirs of Veneto.

The wine

The Amarone Della Valpolicella Classico was born on the great terroirs of the Tenuta Novare. Located in the heart of the hills of the "Amarone della Valpolicella Classico DOC" appellation, near the village of Arbizzano di Negrar, Tenuta Novare is located in the province of Veneto, in the northeast of Italy. The vines, which are on average 20 years old, are planted on a soil composed of limestone and basalt.

The vintage

The 2015 vintage was characterised by a hot summer and a mild autumn, ideal conditions for the maturation of the grapes, thus offering concentration and aromatic intensity, signatures of this exceptional vintage.

Vinification and ageing

Harvested at full maturity, the berries are left to dry on racks or "arele" made of bamboo for a period of about 120 days. At the end of this process, which concludes in January, the dried berries concentrate the aromas and sugars. Ageing in oak barrels is complemented by a further ageing of at least one year in bottle before marketing.

Blend

Corvina and rondinella.
