Description
Characteristics and Tasting Tips for the Reserva 5 Año 2020 Bodegas Protos
Tasting
Appearance
The wine reveals an intense, deep cherry-red colour with garnet highlights, reflecting fine concentration and an evolution already begun through its long maturation.
Nose
The nose opens with a complex aromatic palette of ripe black fruits (blackberry, blackcurrant, black plum), liquorice, toasty touches, vanilla and spice, enriched by mineral and balsamic nuances. More tertiary aromas of leather, cedar and stewed fruit complete the picture, a sign of an evolution already well under way.
Palate
On the palate, this wine is powerful and intense, supported by rounded, refined tannins, perfectly polished by maturation. Lively acidity brings freshness and balance, while the fruit blends harmoniously with the toasty, spicy notes. The very long, persistent finish prolongs the impressions of black fruit, liquorice and balsamic nuances.
Food and Wine Pairing
This wine is an ideal match for roasted or grilled meats such as lamb, pork or beef, as well as stews and slow-cooked dishes. It also pairs very well with game, mature cheeses, mushroom dishes and creamy sauces, or poultry in sauce.
Serving and Cellaring
We recommend serving the Reserva 5 Año 2020 at a temperature between 16 and 18°C, so that its aromatic richness can express itself fully. This wine can be enjoyed now, but it will continue to develop favourably until around 2032.
A long-aged Ribera del Duero red, balancing power and elegance
The Estate
Founded in 1927 in Peñafiel, in Castile and León, Bodegas Protos has established itself as one of the pioneering houses of Ribera del Duero, having registered its brand more than fifty years before the appellation was created. Led since 2009 by Carlos Villar, the bodega carries on a family legacy supported by more than 250 families, several descendants of the eleven founders still sitting on the board of directors. Renowned for its iconic architecture and its commitment to organic farming, Protos combines tradition and modernity.
The Vineyard
This wine comes from old vines over 50 years old, planted on south-facing slopes in emblematic villages of Ribera del Duero such as Anguix, Peñafiel, Pesquera de Duero and Roa. The loose, low-fertility soils, often predominantly limestone with a loamy or sandy-loam texture, impose a natural stress on the vines, resulting in very low yields of around 2,500 kg/ha and remarkable concentration in the grapes.
The Vintage
The 2020 vintage benefited from the climatic conditions characteristic of Ribera del Duero, with a growing cycle that allowed sufficient ripeness while preserving balanced acidity, giving the wine a particular vitality from its youth.
Winemaking and Maturation
The Reserva 5 Año 2020 is harvested by hand into 20 kg crates to preserve the integrity of the grapes, followed by rigorous sorting on a selection table. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, between 26 and 28°C, for approximately 21 to 24 days, with regular pumping over. The wine is then matured for a minimum of 18 months in oak barrels, mostly French, followed by a further ageing period of at least 42 months in bottle.
Grape Variety
This wine is made mainly from Grenache, complemented by other grape varieties.
