Wine Spectator

Bruce Sanderson

This red is silky in texture and intense, yet its black cherry and blueberry flavors are restrained. Harmonious and long, with toasted spice and mineral accents adding depth. Needs a few years. Best from 2023 through 2035. 150 cases imported.

Decanter

This comes from Bouchard’s 3.36ha monopole at mid-slope between Les Teurons and Les Avaux, just south of the Route de Bouze. Fermented with one-third whole clusters and aged in one-third new casks, the wine is delightful, with a ripe, concentrated blackberry/cherry fruit, a floral edge and a good mineral expression. On the palate the texture is silky, but there is rewarding density here as well. A top premier cru.

James Suckling

A powerful, concentrated and well-structured red Beaune with plenty of healthy tannins and deep red-fruit character (very ripe strawberry!). Then comes the surprisingly playful and lively finish that pulls you back for more. Drink or hold.

Cask sample. Light crimson. Rather seductive, heady nose with a hint of violets. Salty, sweet, seductive fruity palate. Masses of pleasure here already with real energy on the finish. Juicy and well balanced. What a charmer! (JR)

William Kelley

Revisited from bottle, the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos de la Mousse is performing brilliantly, bursting with aromas of sweet berry fruit, warm spices and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, sumptuous and enveloping, with melting tannins and an ample core of fruit, it's seamless and charming, concluding with a long, expansive finish. This is as fine a young Clos de la Mousse as I've ever tasted.

Description

A Complex and Refined Beaune Premier Cru

The Estate

Founded in 1731 in Beaune, Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest wine houses in Burgundy. For nearly three centuries, nine generations have succeeded one another, driven by the ambition to create an exceptional estate in Burgundy.

Patiently assembled over the years, the vineyard of the Bouchard Père et Fils estate now covers 130 hectares of vines. Bringing together prestigious appellations and exceptional plots, the Bouchard Père & Fils vineyard represents a unique winegrowing heritage in Burgundy.

The Vineyard

Patiently assembled over the years, the vineyard of the Bouchard Père et Fils estate now covers 130 hectares. Bringing together prestigious appellations and exceptional plots, the Bouchard Père & Fils vineyard represents a unique winegrowing heritage in Burgundy.

The Wine

It was in 1220 that the Clos de la Mousse was bequeathed to the Chapter of Notre-Dame by Canon Edme de Saudon. Divided up during the French Revolution, the Clos de la Mousse vineyard was gradually acquired by the Bouchard family. A monopole of Maison Bouchard Père & Fils since 1872 and still enclosed by its original wall, the Premier Cru "Clos de La Mousse" Domaine Monopole 2018 from Bouchard Père & Fils is a Beaune wine produced from a 3.36-hectare terroir.

Winemaking and Ageing

Once the grapes have been harvested by hand and sorted, the berries are partially or fully destemmed depending on the vintage. Alcoholic fermentation takes place in small vessels, with gentle pressing. The Beaune Premier Cru Clos de la Mousse from Bouchard Père & Fils is aged in French oak barrels (30 to 40% of them new) for 12 to 14 months in the Bastion cellars of the former Château de Beaune.

Blend

This Beaune 1er Cru "Clos de La Mousse" 2019 from Bouchard Père & Fils is 100% Pinot Noir.
