Settling in nicely, this red evokes fading notes of cherry, earth, autumn woods and tobacco. This is still firm, with a touch of new oak and a mouthwatering finish. Drink now through 2035.

Clos du Roi is situated below Les Marconnets with Bouchard owning 0.83ha. The rich clay and white limestone soils are just a thin layer over the bedrock, and this is an early-ripening site. 12–14 months in oak with 30–40% new. More earthy, leafy notes on the nose. Powerful black fruit character on the palate with a firmer tannin structure. Long and persistent on the finish, slightly drying in character.

The 2018 Beaune Clos du Roi 1er Cru shows a little more sensuality than Les Avaux, more black fruit with a subtle oyster shell element that surfaces with time. The palate is well balanced with pliant tannins, rather powdery in texture and “masculine,” with an off-dry, tertiary, tobacco-tinged finish. Give it another year in bottle. Fine. Founded in 1731, the Maison Bouchard Père & Fils is one of the oldest and most prestigious wine estates in Burgundy. This family estate is renowned for its expertise and commitment to quality. The vineyard

Patience built up over the years, the Bouchard Père et Fils estate's vineyard now extends over 130 hectares of vines. Bringing together prestigious appellations with exceptional plots, the Bouchard Père & Fils vineyard constitutes a unique wine heritage in Burgundy.

The wine

This "Clos du Roi" is a Beaune 1er Cru wine from a historic plot located below the Marconnets. On a total area of 13.24 hectares, Bouchard owns a vineyard of 0.83 ares, planted on a clay-limestone soil. The south-east exposure promotes optimal ripening of the grapes. The limestone terroir gives the wine great elegance and a beautiful roundness.

Vinification and ageing

The harvest is manual, with a meticulous sorting of each bunch. Fermentation in small containers and gentle pressing ensure careful vinification. Maceration from 15 to 20 days. The wine is aged for 12 to 14 months in French oak barrels, of which 30 to 40% are new, thus offering a perfect balance between fruit and wood.
