Wine Spectator

Alison Napjus

A vivid Champagne, with chiseled acidity and a fine, vivacious mousse creating a buoyant frame for layered flavors of crushed black raspberry, grilled nuts, pink grapefruit sorbet and coffee liqueur, plus fragrant accents of ground ginger and anise, graphite and lime blossoms. Long and expressive on the finish, crackling with a lingering fleur de sel note. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Meunier. Disgorged winter 2022 to 2021. Drink now through 2033.

The NV Grande Cuvée 171st Edition, based on the 2015 vintage, is every bit as impressive as it was the last time I tasted it. Creamy, layered and resonant, the 171 is seriously impressive. The style is one that favors tension over volume. Lemon peel, white flowers and white pepper open first. Hints of marzipan, tangerine peel and spice add an exotic flair to this mid-weight, understated Grande Cuvée. Floral notes and bright acids perk up the finish. The 171 is wonderfully fresh and vibrant from start to finish. The blend is 45% Pinot Noir, 37% Chardonnay and 18% Meunier, vintages 2015 through 2000. Krug ID: 122013. Disgorged: Winter 2021–2022.

La RVF

This 171st edition stands out completely from the vegetal marker of 2015, thanks to a subtle blend of twelve other vintages and 131 wines. It offers a superb duality with a nose that is both striking and inviting. Pastry notes, smokiness, toastiness and a hint of frangipane combine with white flowers to create a wine that is already approachable yet complex. On the palate, length, tension, and a soft, delicate, velvety mousse reappear.

Wine Enthusiast

R.V.

Deliciously balanced, this Champagne is impressive. The iconic wine is in its 171st blend, meaning it combines vintages for the best result for each bottling, not a specific vintage. The 171st essence is dry, while also having fine textured fruit. This is a magnificent wine and worth aging for another year.

Description

An exceptional champagne that allures with finesse and complexity

The estate

The Krug Champagne House was founded in 1843 by Joseph Krug, a visionary with great passion. It holds a unique library of over 150 reserve wines, some of which are over 15 years old.

The vineyard

With more than 250 different plots, including the prestigious Clos du Mesnil and the Clos d’Ambonnay, the Maison Krug owns a heritage of exceptional vineyards in Champagne.

The wine

Every year since its foundation, Krug unveils a new edition of its Grande Cuvée, in order to present the most generous expression of champagne.

This Krug Grande Cuvée 171st Edition is a blend of 131 wines from 12 different years. The youngest dates from 2015 and the oldest from 2000. The reserve wines from Krug's vast library make up 42% of the final blend, giving this edition a rare fullness and roundness. Resting for around seven years in the House cellars gives it its particular expression and elegance. Each glass contains the result of more than 20 years of in-depth expertise.

Blend

Pinot Noir (45%)
Chardonnay (37%)
Pinot Meunier (18%).
