Description
A full-bodied and refined Haut-Médoc wine
The Estate
Created in the 18th century as Cousran, Château Coufran adopted its current spelling in 1924 upon acquisition by Louis Miailhe. Located in the Haut-Médoc at Saint-Seurin-de-Cadourne, this Bordeaux estate covers seventy-six hectares of gravel near the Gironde estuary. A family property for a century, this dynasty of Bordeaux wine merchants has owned the estate since 1924. Coufran's uniqueness lies in its dominance of Merlot, a strategic choice initiated by Louis Miailhe. This unique character in the Haut-Médoc earned Château Coufran the nickname 'Pomerol of the Médoc'.
The vineyard
Château Coufran's vineyard thrives on an exceptional terroir of the Haut-Médoc, composed of gravel over marl with a clayey subsoil. This geological mosaic, located near the Gironde estuary, benefits from a microclimate favorable to grape ripening. The seventy-six hectares of vines, averaging fifty years old, ensure optimal concentration of aromas.
The wine
The 2024 vintage symbolically marks the centenary of the Miailhe family's leadership of the estate. This particular year represents a tribute to one hundred years of know-how and winemaking tradition passed down from generation to generation.
Winemaking and ageing
The harvest, carried out partly by hand and partly mechanically, allows for rigorous grape selection. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. Ageing takes place over twelve months in French oak barrels.
Blend
The blend of this Château Coufran 2024 consists of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon.
