Description
The freshness and fruity expression of a Fronsac wine
The estate
Overlooking the Isle Valley, a stone's throw from the town of Libourne, Château Dalem is located in the commune of Saillans. An estate that has been active since 1610, this château has belonged to the same family for three centuries. In 1955, Michel Rullier was at the helm of Château Dalem until 2002, when his daughter Brigitte Rullier Loussert took over the running of the estate. Today, working alongside her son Charles, Brigitte Rullier Loussert continues to elevate the reputation of Château Dalem, which has benefited from the valuable advice of the wine consultant, Eric Boissenot, since the 2019 vintage.
The vineyard
Château Dalem 2021 is a Fronsac wine that stems from a 22-hectare vineyard. The vines are 38 years old on average and are planted on clay-limestone plateaus and hillsides.
The vintage
Although the relatively early budburst suggests a season similar to 2019 or 2020, the frost at the beginning of April combined with cool, wet conditions in May slowed down the crops’ growing cycle. Flowering recorded in early June. A cool and less sunny summer than in previous years led to a rather slow veraison and a gradual ripening until the end of September.
Vinification and ageing
The hand-picked grapes are subjected to several rigorous sortings (densimetric, manual and vibrating table). Vinification is carried out gently and in a plot-by-plot manner in order to preserve the density of the fruit and its crunchy feel. Vatting for 23 days to obtain delicate and precise tannins. Malolactic fermentation in barrels (80% new) and vats (20%). Aged for 18 months in vats (50% new barrels and 50% second-fill barrels).
The blend
Château Dalem 2021 comprises a blend of Merlot (90%) and Cabernet Franc (10%).
