Vinum

Fragrant, perfumed, red-fruited and rather slender, with lightly powdery tannins and medium length.

Wine Spectator

James Molesworth

Ripe and solidly built, with warmed cassis and singed vanilla nicely melded against a backdrop of sandalwood and potpourri. Shows light chalky minerality that lingers on the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2030. 17,776 cases made.

Decanter

Smooth and supple, fruity and fun, lifted strawberries and cherries fill the mouth before quite salty, mineral tannins take their place. It’s clean and pure with lovely finesse to the expression, even if the fruit doesn’t quite persist, but it does have a long finish. This will be great with time; it has potential.

The 2021 Château de Camensac doesn’t really pass muster on the nose. It’s rather meager and bereft of fruit concentration—ephemeral. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins, quite dry and austere, with a fleeting finish that disappears before you’ve even said “Bonjour.”

Falstaff

Falstaff

Deep ruby-garnet colour with purple reflections, broad ochre rim. Nuances of red cherries with delicate floral notes in the background, some cassis, some hibiscus. Juicy, elegant, notes of red berries, silky tannins, good freshness, mineral and good persistence, a finesse-rich food wine with fine sweetness on the finish, already approachable.

The 2021 Château De Camensac is rock-solid. A blend of 66% Cabernet Sauvignon and 34% Merlot, it has spicy red and black fruits as well as medium-bodied richness, soft, integrated tannins, good mid-palate depth, and some classic tobacco, cedar pencil, and spice background nuances. It's well worth enjoying over the coming decade.

Returns to an old-school alcohol level, and overall this is an old-school vintage. Sleek, elegant and finessed, savoury but austere, with cranberry, orange peel, cloves and raspberry fruit. 43 hl/ha yield. Higher Cabernet in the blend than usual. Valentin Perrot technical director along with cellar master Christian Alquie. 40% new oak. Harvest from September 28 to October 6.

Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The 2021 de Camensac has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. Notes of damp earth and dried herbs slowly emerge from the glass, giving way to a core of stewed cherries and fallen leaves. The light-bodied palate is uncomplicated, offering a soft texture and a refreshing finish.

La RVF

If the term “drinkability” were to be accepted, it would be a perfect illustration of this Camensac with its lovely fluidity on the palate. A fine, supple wine, yet with fruit and a very integrated finish. The cru is now well positioned and has found its cruising speed.

Le Figaro Vin

A soft, shy nose of purple fruit. The wine shows a full-bodied, broad and harmonious palate, with palpable energy. A crowd-pleaser.

90

Yves Beck

Camensac 2021 reveals shy fruity nuances within a woody context that is present but not dominant. Mirroring the bouquet, the palate is rather discreet. The tannins provide good support, while the aromatic expression remains reserved. It’s the fleshy side of the tannins that opens up some prospects and ensures good balance.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate

William Kelley

The 2021 Camensac opens in the glass with notes of dark berries and cherries mingled with scents of cigar wrapper and pen ink. It is medium-bodied, with a fleshy attack that segues into a somewhat firm, angular palate that displays a touch less plenitude than I perceived from barrel.

Description

Characteristics and Tasting Notes of Château de Camensac 2021

Tasting Notes

Color

The color reveals a dark, brilliant hue with deep ruby highlights characteristic of the Haut-Médoc.

Nose

The bouquet opens with aromas of fresh red fruit, particularly morello cherry and cherry, accompanied by floral notes of rose and peony. On aeration, the nose reveals lovely complexity with nuances of wild blackberry and brambles alongside mineral touches. Vanilla-tinged oak and grey tobacco notes round out this aromatic palette harmoniously.

Palate

The attack is lively and precise, carried by a lovely freshness. The palate stands out for its firm, energetic structure, supported by present yet finely woven tannins. The wine offers lovely roundness, suave tannins and a balanced structure. The lingering finish reveals notes of black cherry and blackberry with beautiful length and a smooth minerality.

Food and Wine Pairing

This Château de Camensac 2021 pairs perfectly with a Bordelaise-style entrecôte, duck breast with porcini mushrooms or beef fillet with Bordelaise sauce. It also elegantly accompanies roasted lamb, game meats or an onion tart. For cheese, opt for aged hard cheeses such as Ossau-Iraty.

Service and Storage

Château de Camensac 2021 is best enjoyed at a temperature of between 15.5 and 18°C. Decanting for one to two hours is recommended to allow the wine to fully reveal its bouquet. This wine can be enjoyed now but has excellent aging potential and can be kept until around 2032.

Other Characteristics

This vintage received 89 points from Wine Spectator and 92 points from Terre de Vins, confirming the fine quality achieved by this cuvée.

An Elegant, Structured Haut-Médoc from Château de Camensac

The Estate

Founded in the 18th century, Château de Camensac is a fifth-growth classified in 1855, located in Saint-Laurent-Médoc in the Haut-Médoc, in Bordeaux. Since 2005, the estate has belonged to the Merlaut family, led by Jean Merlaut and Céline Villars-Foubet. The property spans 150 hectares, including 86 hectares of vines planted on Günzian and Villafranchian gravel soils. Committed to an environmental approach, the château obtained HEV 3 certification in 2021 and continues its conversion to organic farming.

The Vineyard

The vineyard of Château de Camensac enjoys an exceptional location in the Haut-Médoc, at the southern edge of the Saint-Julien appellation. The vines grow on two distinct types of gravel: Günzian gravel, which brings power and minerality, and Villafranchian gravel, which lends delicacy and floral notes. Planted at a remarkable density of 10,000 vines per hectare, the vines have an average age of 35 to 40 years. The estate practices environmentally friendly viticulture with hand-harvesting and controlled yields of between 40 and 45 hectoliters per hectare.

The Vintage

The 2021 vintage was marked by a mild, rainy winter followed by a contrasting spring with high temperatures in March and frosts in April. Flowering took place in humid conditions, favoring Cabernet Sauvignon over Merlot. Summer was in line with seasonal norms. The Merlot harvest took place from September 28 to October 6, while the Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested from October 6 to 13, allowing the grapes to be picked at optimal ripeness.

Winemaking and Aging

Château de Camensac 2021 was vinified on a plot-by-plot basis with complete desulfiting. The musts fermented at low temperature in temperature-controlled concrete vats for around 25 days. Malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels. Aging lasted between 17 and 20 months in barrels, around 60% of which were new, allowing the wine to develop complexity while preserving its fruit expression.
