Description
Characteristics and tasting notes for Mercurey 1er cru "Clos du Roi" 2022
Tasting notes
Colour
The colour reveals a ruby red hue with a velvety and particularly brilliant appearance.
Nose
The nose exudes an intense bouquet of red berries, dominated by cherry and morello cherry, intertwined with subtle floral touches and hints of menthol spice.
Palate
The soft, fluid attack precedes a palate with a structure that is both serious and delicate. The mid-palate reveals a lovely complexity, underpinned by mineral and earthy nuances, before stretching into a long, fresh finish, marked by a hint of salinity and delicious strawberry coulis flavours.
Service and storage
For optimal tasting, it is recommended to serve this Mercurey 1er cru "Clos du Roi" 2022 at between 13 and 14°C while young, taking care to decant it lightly before serving. This wine can be enjoyed now, but will continue to improve in the cellar until around 2037.
Food and wine pairing
This wine pairs beautifully with grilled rib of beef, baked fish with vegetables, or roasted poultry such as duck. It will also enhance mushroom dishes, spiced meals, or a board of aged cheeses, such as a Tomme de Savoie.
The authentic expression of a great Mercurey terroir by Château de Chamirey
The estate
Established in the heart of Burgundy, Château de Chamirey is an essential reference on the Côte Chalonnaise. Although the family's history on these lands dates back to the twelfth century, the estate was officially founded in 1934, when the Marquis de Jouennes decided to bottle his own wines. Now run by Amaury and Aurore Devillard, the estate oversees 37 hectares of vineyards, a large part of which is classified as Premier Cru. The estate stands out for its commitment to sustainable viticulture and its determination to produce wines that faithfully reflect the richness of their terroir.
The vineyard
The vineyard from which this Mercurey originates covers just over three hectares, divided into four contiguous plots planted between 1970 and 2002. Facing south to south-west, these vines benefit from an ideal concave relief and thrive on dark brown soils, particularly rich in Jurassic limestone. The estate favours a very high planting density and sustainable farming practices, including Guyot pruning and green harvesting, in order to encourage concentration and a pure expression of the fruit.
The vintage
The year 2022 began with a dry winter, followed by early budbreak at the end of March. Despite a slight frost episode in April, flowering took place under ideal conditions in mid-May. The summer was then marked by intense heat and persistent drought. Fortunately, welcome rains at the end of June, and again just before the harvest in early September, allowed the berries to reach optimal ripeness and perfect balance.
Winemaking and aging
The grapes for this Mercurey 1er cru "Clos du Roi" 2022 are hand-harvested, followed by rigorous sorting and complete destemming. After a few days of cold pre-fermentation maceration, alcoholic fermentation begins under the action of indigenous yeasts, accompanied by regular punching down of the cap. The wine is then aged for 11 months in French oak barrels, nearly a quarter of which are new. Finally, the wine rests for three months in stainless steel tanks before bottling.
Grape variety
Pinot Noir (100%).
