Description
A rich and structured red wine from Saint-Julien
The estate
Founded by Henri Martin, Château Gloria is one of the most iconic properties of the Saint-Julien appellation, on the left bank of Bordeaux. The singularity of this estate lies in the strength of its vineyard, meticulously assembled by Henri Martin through the acquisition of several vine plots from the Classified Growths of 1855.
The vineyard
Located in the AOC Saint-Julien, the Château Gloria vineyard covers 50 hectares of vines. The plantings are dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (65%), supplemented by Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (5%) and Petit Verdot (5%). The Henri Martin estates, including Château Gloria, have earned the ISO 140001 and HVE3 certifications. The vineyard of Château Gloria is cultivated with the principles of sustainable viticulture with organic and bio-control products.
The vintage
While a particularly mild winter favoured early bud burst, the rainy spring made it more difficult for the teams to manage the vineyard. Flowering took place 10 days ahead of schedule, at the end of a rainy month of May. Hot and dry summer conditions caused significant water stress. While veraison got off to a slow start at the end of July, it was very heterogeneous. The harvest was announced quite early, though eventually postponed in order to allow the grapes the time to ripen, as the process was slowed down due to water stress. Despite lower yields, the fruit promised exceptional quality.
Vinification
Fermentation from 18 to 23 days. The ageing of the Château Gloria 2020 took place in 40% new oak.
The blend
The Château Gloria 2020 was made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (50%), Merlot (35%), Petit Verdot (11%) and Cabernet Franc (4%).
