Appears quite oak-influenced, yet well balanced, with density and freshness and good length; stylish.

Milk chocolate, blackcurrants, clove, black pepper, ash, truffle and perfume on the nose—so much going on and it hints at what’s to come on the palate, which is serious, savoury and a little sombre at this point. This is quite a dark, tightly knit style, tannic yet svelte and charming at the same time. I like the quality of the tannins and there’s some bright strawberry juice that gives it a delicate, fresh aspect despite the power. Lots to like and it will be even better with time.

Attractive aromas of ripe blueberries, salted plums, chocolate, praline and dried lavender. It’s medium- to full-bodied with creamy, silky tannins. Polished and juicy with fresh citrus notes on the finish. Drink after 2023.

The 2019 La Croix de Gay is a bit rustic and rough around the edges, but it has good depth and plenty of character. Black fruit, leather, chocolate, licorice and dried herbs give the 2019 savory intensity to match its succulent dark fruit.

The 2019 La Croix de Gay is composed of 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, it slowly emerges with notes of crushed rocks and tar leading to a core of baked plum and black cherry compote. The medium- to full-bodied palate is generously fruited, with firm, sturdy tannins and an earthy finish.
