Decanter

Also tasted with Jacques Lurton on Friday the 18 April at Château La Louvière, this wine is bright, energetic, and driven by appealing vivacity: lift and precision. While the layered complexity of Domaine de Chevalier remains difficult to surpass, this dry white impresses with seamless texture and undeniable smoothness, due in part to regular stirring of the lees. The profile leans toward fresh pear albeit more restrained than sister estate Château Rochemorin, yet more transparently Sauvignon Blanc in character. Notably, Sémillon has been replanted and will contribute to future blends, Lurton explained.

So much freshness, intensity and complexity in this bouquet! Floral notes are matched by aromas of white-fleshed fruit, followed by hints of anise and peppermint. Slightly saline on the attack, the wine combines breadth and freshness, though the latter clearly takes the lead! A mouthwatering, flavourful wine to enjoy in its youth.

The elegance and liveliness of a great Pessac-Léognan wine

The estate
Located in Léognan and founded in 1310, Château La Louvière spans 65 hectares. Its neo-classical château, listed as a Historic Monument, reflects its rich heritage. Acquired in 1965 by André Lurton, a pioneer of the Pessac-Léognan appellation, the estate is still managed today by the Lurton family. Committed to sustainable viticulture, the property combines ancestral know-how and modern techniques to create wines of excellence.

The vineyard
Located south of Bordeaux, this terroir of approximately 10 hectares dedicated to the production of the estate's white wine benefits from a temperate oceanic climate, protected by the surrounding forests. The vines, with an average age of 18 years, thrive on deep gravel mounds resting on a limestone or clay-limestone bedrock, ensuring excellent drainage and optimal water reserves. The estate practises precision and sustainable viticulture, favouring mechanical soil work, high planting densities and rigorous canopy management to guarantee the best grape maturity.

Vinification and ageing
Manual harvest. Whole-bunch pressing. Alcoholic fermentation in barrels and 600-litre demi-muids. Ageing for 10 months in barrels on lees, with regular bâtonnage. ABV: 13.5% vol.
