Description

The elegance and balance of a Second Cru Classé from the Saint-Julien appellation

The property

The Château Léoville Poyferré, a Second Cru Classé of the Médoc in 1855 whose origins date back to the early 17th century, is one of the most prestigious properties in the Saint-Julien appellation, on the left bank of the Bordeaux region. Masterfully managed by the Cuvelier family and neighbor to illustrious properties such as Pichon Baron or Léoville Las Cases, Château Léoville Poyferré benefits from a terroir renowned for its lean Garonne gravel soils, ideal for the flourishing of the vineyard. In a perpetual quest for perfection, the parcel vinifications are followed by the oenologist Michel Rolland, in order to gently extract the most authentic expression of each grape variety and each parcel. The wines of Château Léoville Poyferré dazzle with their elegance, depth, balance, and power.

The vineyard

Château Léoville Poyferré 2020 comes from a 60-hectare vineyard within the Saint-Julien appellation, whose vines, averaging 39 years old, are planted on Mindel gravel terraces with sandy-clay subsoils.

The wine

Historical vintage, 2020 celebrates the 100th anniversary of the Cuvelier family at the head of the property. On this occasion, a new exclusive packaging is unveiled, whose dark and mysterious shades highlight the property's coat of arms. A golden outline also traces the contour of the parcels making up the vineyard of this Saint-Julien reference.

Vinification and aging

Harvested manually in crates, the bunches are rigorously sorted to keep only the berries of optimal quality. The parcel vinification is carried out in thermo-regulated stainless steel truncated vats. The cold pre-fermentation maceration precedes the alcoholic fermentation with selected yeasts then the malolactic fermentation in new barrels. The aging, lasting 18 to 20 months, is carried out in French oak barrels (80% new, 20% of one wine).

Blend

The Château Léoville Poyferré 2020 is a blend of cabernet sauvignon (64%), merlot (31%), cabernet franc (3%), and petit verdot (2%).
